The John D. Dingell VA Medical center is a state-of-the-art, 108-bed, tertiary-care medical, surgical, and psychiatric facility with an 84-bed nursing home care unit, 50 bed off-site Domiciliary, and 3 community-based outpatient clinics. The VAMC serves as a major WSUSOM site for pre-and post-graduate education in medicine, surgery, and psychiatry. Wayne State University (WSU) is a public research university in Detroit, Michigan. It is Michigan's third-largest university with one of the largest medical school in the nation. Founded in 1868, Wayne State consists of 13 schools and colleges offering more than 350 programs to nearly 27,000 graduate and undergraduate students. Wayne State's main campus comprises 203 acres linking more than 100 education and research buildings. It also has six satellite campuses in Macomb, Oakland, Wayne, and Jackson counties.
Wayne State University School of Medicine (WSUSOM) currently hosts an enrollment of more than 1,500 medical students in undergraduate medical education, master's degree, Ph.D., and M.D.-Ph.D. programs and encompasses 14 areas of basic science. WSUSOM traces its roots through four predecessor institutions since its founding in 1868. The School of Medicine's mission is to provide first-rate medical education while leading the field through research and patient care. The faculty consists of numerous local physicians, many of whom are members of the WSU Physician Group, and provides care at eleven affiliated hospitals, clinics, and training sites throughout the area.
The Department of Neurology at WSUSOM comprises 26 full-time and 6 part-time adult neurology faculty members and 11 faculty members in the Division of Pediatric Neurology, with subspecialists ranging from general neurology to stroke, epilepsy, multiple sclerosis, movement disorders, neuromuscular diseases, clinical electrophysiology, neurogenetics, neuro-oncology, neuro-ophthalmology, headache/pain, neurotrauma/neurocritical care, neuroimaging, and neurorehabilitation. There are 32 neurology residents and 6 basic science laboratories, which are funded by NIH, VA, and other private foundations. With our great passion for scientific research, we published 92 articles in peer-reviewed journals in 2019. Our clinical study core runs ~30 clinical trials. Through the collaborative effort between the Neurology Department and the VA, we expect to greatly expand our subspecialties and research. Candidates will also be given opportunities to apply for VA research grants.
The Neurology Section at the JDDVAMC consists of one full-time section Chief and 6 part-time staff physicians who also carry faculty appointments in the WSUSOM Neurology Department. It also employs a full-time midlevel provider and EEG technician.
The JDDVAMC is a VHA-approved primary stroke center offering thrombolytic therapies to qualified stroke patients and is cooperating in stroke care with other stroke centers in the Detroit metropolitan area.
This position is responsible for providing a broad range of Neurology clinical services to Veterans receiving care at the JDDVAMC as well as clinical, educational, and research efforts at the JDDVAMC and WSUSOM.
Primary duties include providing the full spectrum of diagnostic and therapeutic services to patients with Neurological diseases in both outpatient and inpatient settings. The candidate will be consulting with Primary Care physicians and other specialists to ensure patients receive appropriate, continuous care utilizing E-consult, telehealth, and other virtual as well as face-to-face modalities for consultation. More specifically, the candidate will perform full, general neurological examinations on established or newly- consulted patients in the Neurology clinics, Inpatient Units, or Emergency Department for signs or symptoms of neurologic dysfunction.
