This is a non-supervisory law enforcement position in the Visitor and Resource Protection (Ranger) Division. As a Commissioned Ranger, you will be responsible for performing law enforcement duties including detection, investigation, apprehension, and prosecution under applicable laws, rules, and regulations enacted to insure the protection and safe use of National park resources. You will also educate, interpret, and inform visitors about resources, conservation, laws, and regulations. Collateral duties may include: field training, emergency medical services, special response, technical rescue, swift water rescue, and helicopter rescue. Selectees may be moved between duty stations within the park.
This is a permanent career-seasonal position and subject to release and recall procedures. A permanent career-seasonal position includes all the benefits of permanent employment, but does not provide employment on a full year-round basis. As such, the selectee will be in a non-pay/non-duty status for at least 2 weeks to 6 months per year based on project requirements or weather conditions. The selectee is guaranteed to work at least 6 months per year but not more than 50 weeks per year, with the work schedule to be determined upon appointment.
For King Salmon/Brooks Camp, you will work approximately 10 months, and you will be in a non-pay status for the remainder of the year. Non-pay status is anticipated to occur between October and November each season. Anticipated Entry on Duty: ASAP. The typical seasonal entry-on-duty period can be variable during these months due to weather conditions, project needs, or funding. Selectees duty stationed at King Salmon will be working at Brooks Camp (Lake and Peninsula County) during certain months of the year.
For all other duty stations, you will work approximately6 months, and you will be in a non-pay status for the remainder of the year. Non-pay status is anticipated to occur between late October through late April each season. Anticipated Entry on Duty: late April. The typical seasonal entry-on-duty period can be variable during these months due to weather conditions, project needs, or funding.
Law Enforcement Commission: This position requires applicants to possess, previously held (within the past three years), or be able to possess by 01/04/2021 a valid Type II (seasonal) or higher level National Park Service (NPS) Law Enforcement Commission (or equivalent), which requires completing training from an accredited institution, which currently consists of over 650 class hours and lasts on average 17 weeks. Please visit the Association of National Park Rangers' Seasonal Law Enforcement Training Program (SLETP) for additional information on approved training courses and equivalency for commissioning.
To qualify based on education, you must submit a legible copy of transcripts from an accredited institution with your name, school name, credit hours, course level, major(s), and grade-point average or class ranking. Transcripts do not need to be official, but if you are selected for this position and you used your education to qualify, you must provide official transcripts before you begin work.

A Recruitment Incentive May Be Authorized for a newly selected employee when appointed to a permanent, temporary, or term position. A Relocation Incentive May Be Authorized for a Federal employee when the employee must move, as directed by the National Park Service (NPS) either through a management directed reassignment or selection for employment, to a different location at least 50 miles away from the one where his/her position of record held at time of selection is currently located, due to a need of the NPS. A relocation incentive is not the same as a Permanent Change of Station (PCS) move and, as such, may be granted in conjunction with one another.

Physical Demands: This work regularly includes long periods of standing, hiking and/or climbing, in many cases on uneven, steep, rough, slippery, and/or rugged terrain. Strenuous exertion is frequently required in law enforcement, firefighting, search and rescue, medical and related emergency activities. Lifting or carrying equipment weighing over 50 pounds such as firefighting or search and rescue equipment is required. In some assignments, heavy packs may have to be carried long distances over mountainous, desert, or snow-covered terrain.
Work Environment: Much of the work is performed outdoors in all kinds of weather. The work is performed at various hours of the day and night and for prolonged periods during emergency situations. The Ranger is frequently exposed to high risk and potentially dangerous situations in law enforcement and emergency types of situations which require a range of safety and other precautions.
