The Pacific West Region is recruiting for TEMPORARY seasonal positions not to exceed 1039 or 1730 hours work in a service year. Dates of employment will vary between park sites depending on funding, weather conditions and visitation. Within regulatory limitations, the length of initial appointment may be shortened or extended depending on work availability and funding.
The incumbent provides stone masonry, rough carpentry and mechanical skills as part of the preservation of historic and non historic structures. The primary purpose of the position is the stabilization maintenance effort of various trail and road systems at Lassen Volcanic National Park using various stone masonry techniques. The incumbent may also work on other preservation efforts at historic and non historic structures using traditional dry and wet stacked stone masonry techniques. Incumbent will receive guidance from supervisor with regards to the masonry, rough carpentry and mechanical skills as part of preservation efforts. Incumbent works under the direction of higher graded project manager (and must display journeyman knowledge and skill requirements in the masonry trade). Incumbent will operate motor vehicles and power hand tools such as saws and chainsaws.
Physical Effort: Performs heavy lifting up to 100 pounds, carrying stone, mortar, sand, soil, scaffolding, and other small equipment. Normally required to climb scaffolding to heights of from 5 to 25 feet; bend, stand, and kneel for long periods of time. Sometimes required to hike long distances and climb steep slopes.
Working Conditions: Most work is performed outside with exposure to all types of harsh weather conditions ranging from cold, windy and snowy weather, to hot dry conditions, often in direct sun for all or most of the day, and often in the company of insects, rodents, and reptiles. Some contact is necessary with chemical agents such as cleaning fluids and preservation compounds some of, which are considered hazardous. Assignments involve exposure to dust and dirt while mixing mortar.
There is no substitution of education for experience for Wage Grade (WG) positions.

Non-Competitive Rehire Eligibility: Temporary seasonal employees can only maintain their non-competitive rehire eligibility if they work no more than a combined total of Temporary NTE less than 1040 or 1730 hours anywhere in the National Park Service (NPS) within their established service year. Accordingly, non-competitive rehire eligibility allows for re-appointment to the same position or another position appropriate for temporary appointment with the same qualification requirements (5 CFR 316.402[b][7]), based on series and grade, anywhere in the major subdivision (NPS).
If you have held a temporary seasonal appointment in the past 12 months and have already worked the maximum temporary appointment less than 1040 hours during that period, you are still welcome to apply. However, please be aware that exceeding the limit of 1040 hours in your established service year will result in the loss of your non-competitive rehire eligibility.
The limit can be exceeded by working multiple temporary seasonal positions that result in a combined total greater than 1040 hours. The limit also can be exceeded by working a single temporary seasonal appointment that exceeds 1040 hours, unless granted an exception by OPM.
Employment may be terminated at any time due to fluctuations in funding levels, project needs, employee performance, or other considerations.
1,730 Waiver Information: Only for approved positions in identified geographic locations, the Not to Exceed limit for seasonal temporary time limited appointments is increased to 1,730 hours which will be determined upon selection.
