This advertisement is for a Park Ranger (Protection) position performing resource and visitor protection and public use management in the Grant Grove Sub-District of Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Parks. This is a permanent full-time position.
Supervision is provided by the Grant Grove Sub-District Ranger. Major duties include law enforcement, emergency medical services, search and rescue, and providing leadership to the seasonal staff. In Grant Grove there are 4 permanent rangers, a sub-district ranger, and the Kings Canyon District Ranger.
The sub-district includes 16 miles of front-country road, including a state highway. The primary attraction is the General Grant Giant Sequoia tree, which attracts significant visitation year round. Grant Grove has a lodge, 3 campgrounds with upwards of 300 sites, the Wilsonia Historic District made up of private inholdings within federal jurisdiction, and a year round residential population. The district is surrounded by Forest Service jurisdiction and agency assists occur throughout the year. Grant Grove is centrally located and rangers frequently respond to neighboring districts to assist with larger law enforcement events and EMS calls.
This is a required occupant position with housing in Grant Grove. Verizon Wireless works in Grant Grove. The Kings Canyon Unified School District will supply bus pick up and drop off. A post office is available year round, as is a small market. The cities of Fresno and Clovis are an hour and a half away with all major shopping and medical facilities. There is a large airport in Fresno. Grant Grove can experience high precipitation snowstorms in the winter, but access roads are plowed.
SAR and EMS activity levels are high during the summer season. Grant Grove rangers staff an in-district ambulance year round. Helicopter evacuations of injured visitors are common in the Sierra Crest District during the summer months and Grant Grove rangers frequently assist in the incident command role for these operations. There are training opportunities for Structure Firefighter and/or Engine Operator on the engine based out of Grant Grove.
For those interested and qualified, SEKI has the following active special programs: helicopter short-haul evacuations, technical/high-angle SAR, multi-operational period wilderness search operations, marijuana special operations, single and multi-day cross-country snow surveys, and Park Medic. For Type I applicants there are opportunities for becoming a field training officer or advanced training instructor.
Prior to appointment, the people selected for these positions must be determined physically fit by an authorized physician to perform strenuous and physically demanding duties, pass a medical examination, and pass the Physical Efficiency Battery (PEB). The PEB is a fitness test consisting of five different components: 1) agility run - measures the ability to get up from the ground and sprint while changing directions; 2) bench press - measures upper body strength for one repetition; 3) 1.5 mile run - measures cardio/respiratory fitness; 4) sit and reach - measures flexibility in the lower back, legs and shoulders; and 5) body composition - measures body fat. Prior to appointment, selectees will be tested in all five components, and must pass the agility run, bench press and 1.5 mile run in the 25th percentile.
Air Quality: Poor air quality afflicts Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Parks, especially during summer months - generally May to October. High ozone levels may be the most harmful pollutant here. In summer months, concentrations often exceed the federal ozone health standards. For more information: http://www.nps.gov/seki/learn/nature/airqualityinfo.htm.

Please visit the Association of National Park Rangers' Seasonal Law Enforcement Training Program (SLETP) for additional information on approved training courses and equivalency for commissioning.
To qualify based on education, you must submit a legible copy of transcripts from an accredited institution with your name, school name, credit hours, course level, major(s), and grade-point average or class ranking.
