Duties
Opportunity to learn and work in a management position located in Skagway, AK. Selectee will provide oversite to all park divisions including interpretation and education, visitor services, law enforcement, resource management, administration and facility maintenance, which will enhance their supervisory skills. Selectee will gain experience in handling personal contacts, which include Canadian and Native entities, other federal agencies, organizations, military officials, city and state elected officials.
The Park Manager (Superintendent) Identifies long-range objectives, plans, and goals for the Park, consistent with the National Park Service (NPS) mission and applicable legislation and regulation. Provides strategic leadership and works closely with subordinate supervisors implementing NPS policies and procedures to plan, develop, and implement diverse programs: cultural and natural resources, resources and visitor protection, interpretation and education, visitor services, planning, commercial use, leasing, maintenance and construction, concessions, administration, and public affairs. Directly and indirectly supervises diverse staff and occupations. Ensures on-the-job safety and health of all employees supervised, and proactively initiates efforts in accordance with established agency safety programs. Manages the budgetary process and oversees the allocation and accountability of financial and material resources.
Serving as the principle NPS spokesperson with Federal, State, Native, and local agencies, and groups on all matters related to these units, facilitates open dialogue with and garners input from these groups to arrive at solutions to complex problems. Seeks to develop partnerships or collaborative opportunities that will further mission accomplishments. Oversees an active program of stabilization, restoration, and maintenance of historic buildings owned and managed by the Federal government. Ensures full implementation of Federal policies on drug enforcement and drug-free public lands including aggressive enforcement of all laws and regulations related to the possession, use, distribution, trafficking, cultivation and manufacturing of controlled substances within the Park's jurisdiction.
Participates as a member of the Alaska Leadership Council (ALC) in the development of region-wide policies and programs.

Physical Demands: Much of the work is in an office or meeting setting, but can be highly intense and mentally stimulating. The work requires concentration and the ability to analyze complex concepts entwined in a charged political arena. Field trip may require physical exertion and involve exposure to adverse weather for several consecutive days.
Working Conditions: Work is generally performed indoors. Field inspections will expose incumbent to all manner of adverse weather conditions and difficult terrain, requiring particular attention to safety and proper equipment. Travel to other locations in Alaska and the lower 48 will be required to attend meetings and represent the park.
The National Park Service has determined that the duties of this position are suitable for telework and the selectee may be allowed to telework with supervisor approval.
