Clinical Duties: The Infectious Disease Physician is expected to remain privileged and practicing in their specialty field. The exact privileges and procedures for a particular provider will be approved by the Professional Standards Board. Depending on interest, the candidate could serve as VA ID Fellowship Site Director, and manage the Student and Resident VA ID Elective. Teaching through Dartmouth ID Sectional Conferences and the Infectious Disease Scientific Bases of Medicine course is expected. The candidate will participate in Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center (DHMC) Grand Rounds, and Mortality & Morbidity Conferences. Collaboration with and mentoring Junior Faculty is anticipated. Serving as Hospitalist Attending may be required if needed, and serving in rotation as ID Service Attending at DHMC is an option. Experience in Hospital Epidemiology and Infection Prevention is a plus. Protected research time is available commensurate with funding.
Patient Care: Practitioners are expected to provide patient care that is compassionate, appropriate, and effective for the promotion of health, prevention of illness, treatment of disease, and care at the end of life. Inpatient Consults afford opportunity for teaching cost effective care, exemplify good practice and patient rapport. Outpatient ID Clinic affords opportunity for building VA Choice, appreciation of Diversity, reducing Fractionation of Care. Outreach ID Clinics include the Burlington Lakeside Clinic, teleconferencing, virtual patient visits, management of outpatient IV antibiotics, e-consults, and travel evaluations. The Infectious Disease Service provides opportunity for same day real time visits, or virtual visits through e-consults or telemedicine. The VA is a leader in telemedicine and electronic record access to all VA Hospitals and Clinics.
Medical/Clinical Knowledge: Practitioners are expected to demonstrate knowledge of established and evolving biomedical, clinical and social sciences, and the application of their knowledge to patient care and the education of others. Participation in Infectious Disease Conference at DHMC and Fellowship Director teaching responsibilities are expected. Board eligibility or certification in Infectious Diseases is required.
Clinical Judgment: To ensure practice-based learning and improvement, practitioners are expected to be able to use scientific evidence and methods to investigate, evaluate, and improve patient care. Support for Nurse Practitioners, Physician Assistants, Primary Care, and Mental Health Workers remains an important VA collaboration.
Interpersonal & Communication Skills: Practitioners are expected to demonstrate interpersonal and communication skills that enable them to establish and maintain professional relationships with patients, families, and other members of the health care team.
Professionalism: Practitioners are expected to demonstrate behaviors that reflect a commitment to continuous professional development, ethical practice, and understanding and sensitivity to diversity, and a responsible attitude toward their patients, their profession.
Systems-Based Practice: Practitioners are expected to demonstrate both an understanding of the contexts and systems in which health care is provided, and the ability to apply this knowledge to improve optimizing health care. Structural and Social Forces are important VA concerns, and the VA is our learner's primary exposure to Public Option for health care.
Education: The Physician is expected to show effectiveness in teaching, participate in educational activities, and comply with necessary trainee supervision. Educational, precepting, and mentoring duties may include: clinical supervision of fellows, medical students and residents, supervision and mentoring of APRN's and PA's; formal and informal teaching of fellows, medical students and residents when on rotation. This includes supervision in clinic as well as formal lectures or case discussions; identification and recruitment of promising trainees and providing mentorship in developing skills in research and scholarly activities.
Research and Development: Research in an area of biomedical, translational, medical, or clinical epidemiology research is encouraged, and expected if protected research time is granted based upon funding levels. This includes ongoing generation of data, review of the literature, grant application, preparation and submission of manuscripts to reputable peer-reviewed journals, and mentoring of learners in research.
Administrative Duties: Active participation in VA committees, participation in university/regional/and/or national committees. Other administrative duties are as assigned.
