As an INDUSTRIAL HYGIENIST (TITLE 32), GS-0690-11, the purpose of this position is to provide a professional Industrial Hygienist to plan, schedule, execute, manage, and administer the installation-wide Industrial Hygiene/Bioenvironmental Engineering Program (IH/BEE), which includes occupational health/industrial hygiene, radiation safety, and environmental monitoring to maintain and promote the health and well-being of military and technician personnel.
(1) As an Industrial Hygienist, ensures statutory and regulatory compliance with applicable Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) and Air Force directives and regulations. Acts as the technical expert and advisor to Wing leadership on all issues pertaining to the above directives. Serves as an expert advisor on installation health matters such as, (a) health hazard identification, evaluation and abatement; (b) workplace surveillance, (c) medical-legal documentation, (d) ionizing and non-ionizing radiation, (e) Thermo Luminescent Dosimetry (TLD), (f) drinking water, (g) pesticide use.
(2) Researches industrial operations and develops, implements, and executes surveillance strategies, inspections and evaluations of operational facilities and various activities to detect and eliminate health hazards. Writes industrial facility case files on installation industrial shops.
(3) Determines and assigns Risk Assessment Code (RAC) to health hazards. Establishes RAC based on potential of significant health risks.
(4) Reviews plans for new and existing facility construction projects. Ensures applicable OSHA, AFOSH, and EPA criteria are incorporated.
(5) Develops, implements, and manages the Hazard Communication Standard (HCS) as mandated by OSHA.
(6) Authorizes, reviews, and validates new hazardous material issued. Identifies less hazardous substitutes through expert chemical and process knowledge.
(7) Serves as the Base Radiation Safety Officer for ionizing and non-ionizing radiation.
(8 Researches, formulates, and implements workplace air sampling strategy; performs air sampling surveys and evaluates results.
(9) Conducts noise surveys before commencement of new operations or work processes, when notified that operations/processes have changes, or on a periodic basis.
(10) Directs the base Respiratory Protection Program (RPP) based on air sampling results and expert professional judgment. RPP responsibilities include quantitative fit testing industrial respirators, military gas masks, and medical grade filtering face pieces.
(11) Manages the base drinking water surveillance program, ensuring full compliance with all aspects of the EPA Safe Drinking Water Act (SDWA).
(12) Coordinates and performs internal and external Occupational Health audits.
(13) Updates and reviews various response plans.
(14) Maintains regulations, standards and manuals; writes supplemental guidance to ANG and AF directives; prepares correspondence and a variety of reports relative to the local IH/BEE program.
(15) Serves as advisor to state occupational safety and health councils, member/advisor on management boards and committees concerning industrial health and bioenvironmental issues.
(16) Performs other duties as assigned.

1. Degree: industrial hygiene; or a branch of engineering, physical science, or life science that included 12 semester hours in chemistry, including organic chemistry, and 18 additional semester hours of courses in any combination of chemistry, physics, engineering, health physics, environmental health, biostatistics, biology, physiology, toxicology, epidemiology, or industrial hygiene. Courses in the history or teaching of chemistry are not acceptable.

2. Combination of education and experience -- at least 12 semester hours of course work in chemistry, including organic chemistry, and 18 additional semester hours as specified in 1 above, plus appropriate experience or additional education.
