Directs and coordinates the human resources, funds, materials and facilities necessary to implement the park's resources protection and law enforcement programs. Is designated the park's Law Enforcement Official. Substantial service in primary law enforcement (6c) position equivalent experience outside the federal government is a mandatory prerequisite for the position. The position functions as both an administrative position in the law enforcement program and the primary law enforcement ranger for the park.

- Time in Grade: Any individual who is currently holding, or has held within the previous 52 weeks, a General Schedule position under non-temporary appointment in the competitive or excepted service, must meet time-in-grade requirements (must have served 52 weeks at the next lower grade or equivalent in the Federal service). Time-in-grade requirements must be met by the closing date of this announcement.
- Selectee will be required to carry a firearm while performing duties and maintain firearm proficiency.
- Selectee must be free of any domestic violence convictions. Appointment will be subject to the applicant's successful completion of a background security investigation and favorable adjudication. Failure to successfully meet these requirements will be grounds for termination.
- You will be required to submit to a drug test and receive a negative drug test result prior to appointment. In addition, this position is subject to random testing for illegal drug use.
- Prior to appointment, the people selected for these positions must be determined physically fit by an authorized physician to perform strenuous and physically demanding duties, pass a medical examination, and pass the Physical Efficiency Battery (PEB). The PEB is a fitness test consisting of five different components: 1) agility run 2) bench press 3) 1.5 mile run 4) sit and reach 5) body composition. Prior to appointment, selectees will be tested in all five components, and must pass the agility run, bench press and 1.5 mile run in the 25th percentile.
- You will be required to wear a uniform and comply with the National Park Service uniform standards. A uniform allowance will be provided.
- You may be required to work on-call, evenings, weekends, holidays, overtime and shift work.
- If you are a new employee or supervisor in the Federal government, you will be required to complete a one-year probationary period.
- You may be required to travel overnight away from home occasionally. You must be able to obtain a government charge card for travel purposes.

- Must currently possess, previously held (within the past three years), or be able to obtain a valid Type I National Park Service (NPS) Law Enforcement Commission, or equivalent, by entrance on duty. More information can be found in the 'Education' section of this job announcement. (You must annotate date of commission in your resume).
- You must have prior experience as a Law Enforcement Officer carrying out duties involving the investigation, apprehension, and/or detention of persons suspected or convicted of offenses against the criminal laws of the United States. (You must document this experience in your resume).
- Applicants must possess at least one of the following minimum qualifications by close of the announcement:
- EXPERIENCE: At least one full year of specialized experience comparable in scope and responsibility to the GS/GL-09 grade level in the Federal service (obtained in either the public or private sectors). Specialized experience is experience that equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities needed to successfully perform the duties of this position.
- Examples of specialized experience could include: Park Guide or tour leader; law enforcement or investigative work; archeological or historical preservation research work; forestry and/or fire management work in a park, recreation, or conservation area; management, assistant, or program specialist work involving the development and implementation of policy related to protection, conservation, or management of park areas or similar operations; or other similar work. You must include hours per week worked.
- EDUCATION: Successful completion of at least three full years of graduate level study leading to a Doctorate, Ph.D., or equivalent degree at an accredited college or university in directly-related fields such as natural resource management, natural sciences, earth sciences, history, archaeology, anthropology, park and recreation management; law enforcement/police science, social sciences, museum sciences, business administration, public administration, behavioral sciences, or sociology. You must include transcripts.
- Successful completion of a COMBINATION of education and experience as described above. To combine education and experience, first take the number of semester hours or equivalent earned towards a graduate degree, in excess of 36 semester hours, and divide by 18 semester hours or equivalent. Then, take the number of months of experience and divide by 12 months. Add the percentages together. The total must equal at least 100 percent to qualify.

This is a secondary-administrative law enforcement position under the special retirement provisions of 5 U.S. C. 8336 (c) (CSRS) and 5 U. S. C. 8412 (d) (FERS). If such an applicant is selected, they will be placed in the regular retirement system. Physical Demands: Duties require prolonged periods of standing, sitting and walking. The incumbent will experience periods of stress and physical effort requiring stress and physical effort requiring strenuous exertion in harsh conditions. May lift and carry objects over 50 pounds. Participation in the NPS Physical Fitness program and regular medical examinations in accordance with NPS-57 guidelines is mandatory. Favorable results from Pre-appointment physical must be returned prior to appointment.
Working Conditions: Work is performed both indoors and outdoors. Weather at Sitka National Historic Park is typical for the Pacific Northwest Coast and includes periods of heavy fog, rain and snow. Temperatures range from below freezing during the winter to the mid 70s during the summer. The incumbent is involved with wildlife in the park, including bears; and may be involved with helicopter and fixed-wing aircraft operations, and other hazardous equipment and situations.
In the event of an accident while traveling in a government aircraft, the payable benefits of a private life insurance policy may be affected.
