Duties
This position is located in the Diversion Control Division (DC), Drug and Chemical Evaluation Section (DOE), Drug and Chemical Control Unit (DOEC), Arlington, VA. The incumbent will perform such duties as:
- Serves as a scientific advisor in pharmacology and related biological and physical sciences as applied to the implementation of the Controlled Substances Act (CSA).
- Serves as a pharmacology expert and provides consultation, advice and expertise to the government attorneys to facilitate the prosecution and sentencing of individuals charged with violation of the Controlled Substances Act (CSA).
- Serves as authority on drug schedules and substances of abuse and misuse with strong knowledge of uses legally and/or illegally.
- Collects and evaluates scientific articles and prepares reports concerning the pharmacological action of potential controlled substance and/or the application of new technology for their control for publication in agency, government or scientific journals or for presentation at scientific meetings.
- Reviews inspection reports, inspection data and analytical evidence, or scientific and technical data, for consideration of regulatory action.
- Represents and advocates on behalf of the DEA to ensure the goals and objectives of diversion control are taken into consideration.
- Defines data needs, evaluates existing data sources, investigates new data sources and recommends and obtains requisite scientific and drug abuse data to provide policy guidance on domestic and international drug and chemical control matters.
- As technical specialist in pharmacology and related regulatory areas, recommends, administrative and regulatory action for a variety of regulated drugs or related substances.

Basic Qualification -- Individual Occupational Requirements (IOR)
Possess a degree in biological, medical, veterinary, or physical science, or in pharmacy that included at least 30 semester hours in chemistry and physiology and 12 semester hours in pharmacology.
AND
Specialized Experience Required
GS-12: Must have one (1) year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-11 level or pay band in the Federal service that includes performing the following duties: serving as scientific advisor in pharmacology and related biological and physical sciences; preparing scientific and technical reports; analyzing and evaluating scientific and drug abuse data against current scientific standards; and managing scientifically validated drug and chemical database systems.
