Duties
The incumbent will provide subsistence program support to facilitate implementation of agency mandates and operations pertaining to the Alaska National Interest Lands Conservation Act and the Federal Subsistence Management Program. In this capacity they help to analyze proposed regulatory actions, acquire and disseminate stakeholder opinions, and assist Alaska NPS units in meeting their subsistence-related programmatic needs. Major duties include:
- Represent the NPS at public meetings around the state to discuss proposed regulatory changes to the program. These meetings include Regional Advisory Councils, Subsistence Resource Commissions, local advisory committees, the state Board of Fisheries and Board of Game as well as rural and Alaska Native organizations. Considerable travel to remote rural communities is often needed.
- Serve as a co-chair of the Alaska Region NPS Subsistence Advisory Council (SAC). Includes organization of an annual in-person SAC meeting and SRC All-Chairs workshop.
- Serve as a technical adviser and NPS liaison to the Fisheries Resource Monitoring Program (FRMP) and the Partners for Fisheries Monitoring Program (PFMP). Serves as needed on the FRMP Technical Review Committee and the PFMP Selection Committee.
- Assists in Subsistence Resource Commission (SRC) compliance with the Federal Advisory Committee Act (FACA) and in the nomination and appointment process for SRC members. Includes compiling, submitting and tracking Federal Register Notices.
- Serve as the alternate NPS representative to the Interagency Staff Committee.
- Helps to coordinate NPS and Federal Subsistence Management Program comments on proposed actions to the Alaska Board of Game and the Alaska Board of Fisheries.
- Assist the Subsistence Program Manager in presenting, explaining and justifying information, analyses and agency requirements to help insure NPS and other Federal mandates are met. Includes developing written reports and briefing material to help inform NPS personnel on subsistence management issues throughout the state, and maintaining adequate records of regulatory and permitting decisions.

Physical Demands: The position may require strenuous physical activity including periods of standing, walking. climbing. and lifting and carrying heavy objects. Some activities will occur in physically dangerous areas or settings. Documentary research and report writing work is sedentary. which entails the ability to concentrate and write for long periods of time.
Working Conditions: Work is performed primarily indoors. Occasionally, work may be performed outdoors in all types of weather and conditions. Outdoor assignments may be performed in potentially hazardous areas including steep slopes, rocky terrain, volcanoes, caves, firelines, arctic environments, swamps, deserts, and forests. On occasion, flying in fixed-wing aircraft and helicopters is possible.
