Duties
A permanent career-seasonal position includes all the benefits of permanent employment, but does not provide employment on a full year-round basis. As such, selectee will be in a non-pay/non-duty status for at least 2 weeks to 6 months per year based on project requirements or weather conditions. Selectee is guaranteed to work at least 6 months per year but not more than 50 weeks per year, with the work schedule to be determined upon appointment. The typical season for Mount Rainier National Park is February through November, but can be variable during these months due to project requirements or weather conditions.
The incumbent is responsible for planning, carrying out, and supervising implementation of the hazard tree management program including: inventory and monitoring of forest trees, pests, and pathogens; hazard tree surveillance and evaluation; field data collection, including mapping (geographic information system tools); data management and reporting; administrative work; and supervisory duties.
Work will be conducted independently and will require the appointee to be self-directed and motivated. The incumbent is under the direct supervision of the park Plant Ecologist and will supervise seasonal employees in technical assessments and hazard tree control. The employee will be expected to work in a team atmosphere, be responsible for creating a safe and inclusive environment, and to communicate professionally and respectfully with staff of this and other parks, agencies and partners. The position organizationally is located within the Division of Natural and Cultural Resources at Mount Rainier National Park.
Responsibilities include:
- Conducts surveys to evaluate hazard tree potential using current methodologies and techniques.
- Performs forest health assessments and studies using knowledge of tree and forest health issues, including tree species, tree pests and pathogens.
- Tracks hazard trees through coordinated, regular monitoring of status or mitigation using standardized data collection methods in a geodatabase.
- Proposes appropriate treatments and mitigations of hazard trees to ensure public and employee safety.
- Participates in tree treatment and follow-up evaluations.
- Coordinates complex work planning with other divisions and contractors, including overseeing tree mitigations.
- Prepares technical reports summarizing hazard tree program actions.
- Provides expert comments on compliance matters related to forest management.
- Develops annual work plans for the hazard tree management program in keeping with program goals and emergent needs.
- Manages project budgets.
- Inventories and maintains equipment needed for hazard tree assessment and mitigation.
- Acts as supervisor and provides leadership and training to seasonal field crews, including interns and staff from other divisions.

- Any individual who is currently holding, or has held within the previous 52 weeks, a General Schedule position under non-temporary appointment in the competitive or excepted service, must meet time-in-grade requirements (must have served 52 weeks at the next lower grade or equivalent in the Federal service). Time-in-grade requirements must be met by the closing date of this announcement.
- You will be required to operate a government (or private) motor vehicle as part of your official duties; a valid driver's license is required. You will be required to submit a Motor Vehicle Operator's License and Driving Record. - You will be required to wear a uniform and comply with the National Park Service uniform standards. A uniform allowance will be provided.

Physical Demands: The position may require strenuous physical activity including periods of standing, walking, climbing, and lifting and carrying heavy objects. The employee may need to hike long distance carrying a heavy load and work in steep and unstable terrain at elevations from 2000 to 7000ft. Some activities will occur in physically dangerous areas or settings and in all weather. Employee will handle sharp tools and technical implements and perform physical labor as a regular part of their duties. Planning, administrative duties, data management, and report writing are sedentary, and entail the ability to concentrate and write for long periods of time.
Working Conditions: Work is performed both indoors and outdoors in all types of weather. Assignments may be performed in potentially hazardous areas including steep slopes, rocky terrain, volcanoes, firelines, arctic environments, swamps, deserts, and forests. Flying in fixed-wing aircraft and helicopters is possible.
The National Park Service has determined that the duties of this position are suitable for telework and the selectee may be allowed to telework with supervisor approval.

Mount Rainier National Park is located approximately 2 hours south of Seattle, near the community of Ashford. It is included within the Seattle/Tacoma locality pay area. The climate is considered moderate, but frequently overcast and rainy at lower elevations during fall, winter and spring. Longmire often experiences snowfall from November-May. Summers are normally sunny and pleasant with daytime temperatures ranging from the low 70's to low 80's and low humidity.
