As a Data Management Specialist which can be filled by a Geographer, General Engineer, Physical Scientists or a Librarian within the Pacific Coastal & Marine Science Center, some of your specific duties will include:
-The Data Manager designs and coordinates protocols and procedures necessary for data management, data integration, publication of data and metadata, preserving and providing public access to scientific data. The incumbent oversees use of data management systems in the Center.
-Incumbent will advise Center scientists and data stewards within data projects to:
-develop and oversee practices and procedures for the Center’s data management workflow,
-facilitate the preparation and finalization of approved data and/or software for release,
-oversee use of Bureau and/or Center data repositories,
-manage the preservation process; train Center stewards and other collaborators on data management procedures and best practices, and
-provide insight for evaluation and use of data management tools and science databases.
-Coordinate with Center staff and/or Records Liaison Officer/Coordinator to ensure preservation of scientific data, metadata, software, and records of the Center.
-Incumbent follows best practices for data preservation and records management in USGS.
-For legacy information products, the Data Manager may create inventories, perform data rescue, conduct data release and dissemination, and ensure proper preservation.
-The Data Manager may interact with separating employees and employee’s supervisor to ensure all USGS owned data and metadata solely in their possession are made available and/or are transferred to the responsible party.

You will be required to operate a government-owned or -leased vehicle in the performance of your official duties. If you're qualifying based on specialized experience, you must meet the following:
For Geography GS-0150-09:
One year of appropriate professional experience in geography that is equivalent to at least the GS-07 level in the Federal service.
Examples of such experience could include compiling and evaluating basic geographical facts from a variety of specified sources, ascertaining discrepancies in data, and presenting geographical information from specified maps, charts, and other source materials in the most useful format. This level of work would have involved following established procedures or detailed instructions and would have required a familiarity with a variety of basic geographic tools and sources.
For GS-0150-11:
One year of appropriate professional experience in geography that is equivalent to at least the GS-09 level in the Federal service.
Examples of such experience may include: 1) locating, examining, evaluating and selecting, from a variety of source materials, information for use in depicting the location and standardizing the nomenclature of physical and humane features on a map, chart or in a gazetteer; 2) determining the distribution of like phenomena (e.g., deciduous vegetation or precipitation) over Eastern U.S., or comparing the distribution of two or three different kinds of phenomena, e.g., deciduous vegetation and precipitation; 3) providing assistance to a higher-graded researcher on small, self-contained studies. Examples 1 & 2 included independent responsibility for small projects or significant segments of larger projects. Discrepancies may have arisen in source materials. Judgment was used to resolve the less difficult problems; a higher-level authority resolved the most difficult problems. Work was carried out in accordance with established procedures and criteria. For example; 3, extensive and precise instructions were provided and the project leader was readily available for consultation and guidance.
For General Engineer GS-0801-09:
One year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-07 level in the Federal service. Specialized experience is progressively responsible experience in the design of construction or alteration projects involving buildings or major building systems of moderate complexity; or assisting in the coordination of the activities of architects, engineers, tenants and construction contractors on such projects. Such experience must also include having assisted in managing projects and/or portions of projects (balance scope/quality, schedule and budget) requiring the services of multiple disciplines from project initiation phase through project closeout.
For GS-0801-11:
One year of specialized experience, equivalent to the GS-09 grade level in the Federal service that includes preparing, presenting, and/or defending findings on scientific research; providing consultation to industry, academic and/or private laboratory scientists; and reviewing scientific data and determining project technical needs
For Physical Scientist GS-1301-09:
One year of appropriate professional experience that is in or directly related to the duties of the position to be filled is qualifying if it is equivalent to at least the GS-7 level in the Federal service, and if it equipped the applicant with the knowledge, skills and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the position.
Examples of such experience may include performing a variety of observations, computations, compilations and analyses in assisting higher-level scientists in carrying out physical science assignments. This work experience would have involved following established methods and procedures, or detailed instructions; using some judgment in applying basic principles and procedures; and independently completing recurring assignments, but referring deviations, problems, and unfamiliar situations to a designated person for decision or help
For GS-1301-11:
One year of appropriate professional experience that is in or directly related to the duties of the position to be filled is qualifying if it is equivalent to at least the GS-9 level in the Federal service, and if it equipped the applicant with the knowledge, skills and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the position.
Examples of such experience may include independent responsibility for a well-defined study or for a phase of a larger study that required the planning and carrying out of routine physical science work. This work would have required the individual to select and make minor adaptations to procedures and accepted practices and handle unexpected conditions arising in the normal course of the work. At this level, physical scientists have the ability to independently perform moderately difficult and responsible scientific work.
For Librarian GS-1410-09:
2 full years of progressively higher level graduate education or master's in library science or equivalent graduate degree, e.g., LL.B. or J.D., related to the position or One year of specialized experience equivalent to at least a GS-07 or equivalent.
Example of such experience may include identifying and analyzing relationships among the various aspects of library work, such as the effect of cataloging decisions on the accessibility of the information by reference librarians and the clientele.
