This position is located in a National Park Service (NPS) Alaska Regional Office to serve primarily as the Federal Government Lead for contaminated AML sites. When many of the Alaska Park Units were created or expanded with the passing of Alaska National Interest Lands Conservation Act (ANILCA), many abandoned mineral lands (AML) and active mines were incorporated and many of these sites were contaminated with hazardous substances. The primary purpose of this position is to serve as the Federal Government Lead for two contaminated AML sites in Wrangell-St. Elias National Park and Preserve. It is anticipated that cleanup of these sites may take up to four years. The incumbent will be the Federal Government Lead for these projects and others across the Alaska Region, as the workload permits, ensuring that contaminated site cleanup planning and execution meet federal requirements, effectively utilize federal systems, and comply with NPS policy and practice. The incumbent will act to promote cross-programmatic cooperation, consistency of practice, and efficient resource utilization in AML site cleanup efforts.
The incumbent also will assist with evaluating AML sites throughout the Alaska Region for physical safety and work with park managers to implement safety mitigation measures by assisting with managing AML projects, documenting AML site status, assesses mitigation needs, and maintaining a database of AML sites. The incumbent also will assist with various projects as a technical advisor in geology for Alaska parks related to geology, hydrogeology, paleontology, geomorphology, cave and karst resources, mining, oil and gas development, erosion control, and other related activities.
