This position is established under DOL’s Pathways Internship Program. This is a developmental position designed to prepare the incumbent to fully perform the duties at the full performance level. Under close technical supervision, the incumbent participates as an intern under the formalized Pathways Internship Program and performs work designed to develop the application of professional knowledge of the fundamentals of international relations as it relates to accomplishing Agency international research, analysis, and evaluation efforts.
Major duties for this position include, but are not limited to, the following:

To be appointed to this position, you must be enrolled or accepted for enrollment on at least a half-time basis at a qualifying academic institution at the time of appointment, and must maintain such enrollment throughout the duration of the appointment.
Upon completion of requirements for graduation and successful completion of the internship program requirements (i.e. work hours, satisfactory performance, training, etc.), a DOL Pathways Intern may be eligible for non-competitive conversion, at the agency's discretion, to a term or permanent position in the competitive service.
Appointee must be a U.S. citizen in order to be eligible for conversion to a permanent position in the competitive service upon completion of the Pathways program.
To be eligible for appointment to a position in the DOL Pathways Intern Program, an individual must meet the definition of a “student” based on the following criteria:
1. Is enrolled or has been accepted for enrollment in a qualifying educational institution.
2. Enrollment must be on at least a half-time basis.
3. Enrollment is for the purpose of obtaining an academic degree or diploma, or a certificate program.
AND
Basic Qualification Requirements: Applicants must meet one of the following basic requirements.
Degree: major or equivalent, or a combination of courses totaling at least 24 semester hours in international law and international relations, political science, economics, history, sociology, geography, social or cultural anthropology, law, statistics, or in the humanities; or 12 semester hours in one of the above disciplines and 12 semester hours in statistics/quantitative methods.
OR
Combination of education and experience: courses equivalent to a major, or a combination of related courses totaling at least 24 semester hours, in one or more of the social sciences, or in the humanities, as shown above, plus appropriate experience or additional education.
OR
Experience: four years of appropriate experience in one or more of the fields listed above in work associated with international organizations, problems, or other aspects of foreign affairs. This experience must have included either (a) responsibility for the direction and coordination of research, analysis, or other professional work in one or more of the fields listed in A above, or (b) specialized professional work involving a high level of difficulty and responsibility in one or more of these fields.
Specialized Experience: In addition to meeting the basic requirements listed above, applicants must have 52 weeks of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade level in the Federal Service.
To qualify at the GS-07 level, Applicants must possess 52 weeks of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-05 grade level in the federal service. Specialized experience is defined as experience conducting research and writing reports for public consumption on international issues.

One year of progressively higher level graduate education.

To be eligible for appointment, you must be currently enrolled or accepted for enrollment on at least a half-time basis at a qualifying educational institution, for the purpose of obtaining a diploma, degree, or certificate.
