Duties
As a Supervisory Mathematical Statistician or Supervisory Survey Statistician, you will:
- Supervise a team and will be responsible for overseeing and directing statistical methods in support of impartial data collection programs and processing activities for on-going surveys, and producing reports and analyses related to those surveys.
- Serve as a full supervisor for a team, assigning and reviewing work daily, weekly, and/or monthly to include planning work to be accomplished by subordinate employees, setting and adjusting short-term priorities, and preparing schedules for completion of work; giving advice, counsel, or instructions to employees on work matters; and identifying work related developmental and training needs of an employee and scheduling needed development and training.
- Serve as the rating official for performance management and recommends performance standards and ratings to the reviewing official to include developing performance standards and appraising work performance of employees.
- Design and manage the development of state-of-the-art statistical methods to support the development of survey-based and model based energy estimates, and analyses of policies and legislation.
- Manage the development of energy related models, model testing, and the process of making the models and documentations available for external review. Formulate and develop statistical requirements for energy data programs for the Department, other government agencies, Congress and the public, in light of the changing regulatory environment within the energy industry.

Qualifications
BASIC REQUIREMENTS:
For the GS-1529, Supervisory Survey Statistician, you must possess the following Basic Requirements:
A. Degree: that included 24 semester hours of mathematics and statistics, of which at least 12 semester hours were in mathematics and 6 semester hours were in statistics.
OR
B. Combination of education and experience -- at least 24 semester hours of mathematics and statistics, including at least 12 hours in mathematics and 6 hours in statistics, as shown in A above, plus appropriate experience or additional education.
For the GS-1530, Supervisory Mathematical Statistician, you must possess the following Basic Requirements:
A. Degree: that included 15 semester hours in statistics (or in mathematics and statistics, provided at least 6 semester hours were in statistics), and 9 additional semester hours in one or more of the following: physical or biological sciences, medicine, education, or engineering; or in the social sciences including demography, history, economics, social welfare, geography, international relations, social or cultural anthropology, health sociology, political science, public administration, psychology, etc. Credit toward meeting statistical course requirements should be given for courses in which 50 percent of the course content appears to be statistical methods, e.g., courses that included studies in research methods in psychology or economics such as tests and measurements or business cycles, or courses in methods of processing mass statistical data such as tabulating methods or electronic data processing.
OR
B. Combination of education and experience -- courses as shown in A above, plus appropriate experience or additional education. The experience should have included a full range of professional statistical work such as (a) sampling, (b) collecting, computing, and analyzing statistical data, and (c) applying statistical techniques such as measurement of central tendency, dispersion, skewness, sampling error, simple and multiple correlation, analysis of variance, and tests of significance.
Education cannot be substituted for Specialized Experience for the GS-15 grade level.
In addition to meeting the "Basic Requirements" described above, you must also meet the "Specialized Experience Requirements" described below.
SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS: Specialized Experience is experience that equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities (KSA's) to perform successfully the duties of the position, and that is typically in or related to the position to be filled. A qualified candidate's online application and resume must demonstrate at least one year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-14 grade level in the Federal service.
