The position supports the Central Alaska and Arctic Network Inventory and Monitoring Programs, and is responsible for assisting with the implementation of the aquatic monitoring program. The position's primary focus is to analyze and synthesize the results of this 15-year long lake monitoring program and streamline data collection and implementation. The position also supports the monitoring program in the following ways:
- Operates YSI and Onset water quality monitoring equipment
- Coordinates the installation, maintenance, and operation of 12 permanent water quality monitoring stations.
- Gathers and analyzes complex ecological data; summarizes and interprets results utilizing statistical software.
- Performs data entry, validation, and synthesis on a wide range of geospatial data types including physical, chemical and biological data.
- Analyzes geospatial data using GIS
- Uses a diverse array of software packages (Aquarius, R, Pathfinder Office, HOBOware, relational databases such as Microsoft Access, SQL Server and front-end application development etc.) to manage program data
- Assists in the management of a large sequel server database
- Prepares sections of reports and scientific manuscripts; makes oral/poster presentations at scientific meetings.
- Travels extensively throughout northern Alaska
- Operates a government vehicle as an incidental driver.
- Operates and maintains motorized and non-motorized boats.
This position is located in the Fairbanks Administrative Center, in the Natural Resources Division of Yukon-Charley Rivers National Preserve and Gates of the Arctic National Park and Preserve. The position supports the Central Alaska and Arctic Network Inventory and Monitoring Programs.
Physical Demands: This position involves a substantial amount of field work. When engaged in field activities, the work is at times strenuous, requiring exertion such as walking over wet, rough, uneven, or rocky surfaces; carrying heavy loads (over 50 pounds) over rough terrain; bending, crouching, stooping, stretching, reaching, or similar activities. The work requires above average agility and dexterity. Travel to remote study sites will be required via boats, small aircraft, helicopter, snowmobiles, all-terrain vehicles, and on foot. Some activities will occur in physically dangerous areas or settings. Extended periods of camping in tents or cabins in remote field camps may occur. The incumbent must be able to cope with the pressure of short time deadlines, responsibilities of logistics to remote areas, cultural conflicts, and adverse weather conditions.
Working Conditions: The work requires both office and field work. Office work is performed in a work environment that is adequately lighted, heated and ventilated. Field work is often performed in temperature and weather extremes; in terrain that is steep, uneven, rocky, covered with thick, tangled vegetation; and/or in and around flowing and standing water. When conducting field investigations, the incumbent may be required to camp (often under adverse weather conditions) in small tents with suitable survival gear for periods of one to two weeks at a time and carry a firearm for bear protection. The incumbent must be prepared at all times during flight operations to encounter potential survival situations, due to deteriorating weather, waning daylight, or mechanical malfunctions. These survival situations can be under extremely harsh conditions of severe cold to - 60 in winter, and heat of over 100 degrees in summer. In summer, insects occur in densities such as to create severe physical and mental distress. Travel to other NPS regions and international destinations (e.g. Canada) may be required.

You will be required to submit a Motor Vehicle Operator's License and Driving Record. You must also submit (within a State sealed envelope or submitted directly by the State authorities), and at your own expense, all certified driving records from all States that disclose all valid driver's licenses, whether current or past, possessed by you.
- You will operate boats.
- You may be required to complete training and operate a four-wheel drive vehicle.
- You may be required to work on-call, evenings, weekends, holidays and overtime.
- If you are a new employee in the federal government, you will be required to complete a one-year probationary period.
- You may be required to travel overnight away from home up to 24 nights per month. You must obtain a government charge card for travel purposes.
- You may be required to complete training and obtain/maintain a government charge card with travel and/or purchase authority.
Qualifications
To qualify for this position, you must possess the following basic requirement by close of the announcement.
A degree in biology, or a related field of science underlying ecological research that included at least 30 semester hours in basic and applied biological sciences. These hours must have included at least 9 semester hours in ecology, and 12 semester hours in physical and mathematical sciences.
In addition, to qualify for this position at the GS-09 grade level, you must possess one of the following minimum qualifications by close of the announcement:
EXPERIENCE: At least one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-07 level in federal service (obtained in either the public or private sectors). Specialized experience is experience that equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills and abilities needed to successfully perform the duties of this position. Examples of qualifying specialized experience may include: inventorying and compiling data on aquatic ecosystem components, such as water, vegetation, fish, macroinvertebrates, or waterfowl species; monitoring and reporting interactions between terrestrial and aquatic environment, caused by environmental factors; or studying the structure and interactions of populations of species in the aquatic environment. You must include hours per week worked.

EDUCATION: Successful completion of two years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to a master's degree or master's or equivalent graduate degree in an accredited educational institution concentrated in a field that is directly related to the work of this position, such as in aquatic ecology, wetland ecology, wildlife ecology, or other directly-related subject matter. You must include transcripts.

Combination of Experience and Education: A combination of experience and education that is equivalent to the above requirements. To calculate your percentage of qualifying graduate education, divide your number of semester hours in excess of 18 semester hours by 18 or the number your school uses to represent one year of full time graduate academic study. To calculate your percentage of experience, divide your months of qualifying specialized experience by 12. Add the two percentages. They must equal at least 100% to qualify using this option.
You must include months, years and hours per week worked to receive credit for your work and/or volunteer experience. One year of specialized experience is equivalent to 12 months at 40 hours per week. Part-time hours are prorated. You will not receive any credit for experience that does not indicate exact hours per week or is listed as "varies."
Volunteer Experience is experience that refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
Education
To qualify based on education, you must submit a legible copy of transcripts from an accredited institution with your name, school name, credit hours, course level, major(s), and grade-point average or class ranking. Transcripts do not need to be official, but if you are selected for this position and you used your education to qualify, you must provide official transcripts before you begin work.
