The Chief, Office of Congressional and Public Affairs serves as the principal advisor to the Administrator, the Deputy Administrator, and other Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) officials in providing guidance and coordinating policy and programs of DEA components on all Congressional and public affairs issues.

As the agency authority on Congressional and Public Affairs, the specific duties of the incumbent involve working with and assisting the Administrator in carrying out the following major responsibilities: planning, developing, and implementing programs and activities aimed at: 1) developing an awareness by the public, the Administration, and Congress as to the objectives and programs of the DEA and bringing about compliance with Federal laws affecting the handling and usage of narcotics and dangerous drugs; 2) developing sensitivity at the international, national, state, and local levels of these objectives an programs; 3) assisting the various elements of the mass communication media in interpreting the issues and considerations relating to narcotics and dangerous drugs; 4) direction of public and media affairs for large organization. Requires engagement with national media, directing public affairs and media strategies, experience in media management. This will include large press events involving senior members of the Administration, crisis management and media engagement and directing large national media campaigns; 5) fostering a climate of intergroup harmony through the development and dissemination of effective informational material and educational programs to encourage and utilize the cooperation and understanding of specific groups, and 6) establishing and maintaining continuing liaison with a myriad of agencies to assure representation of the law enforcement viewpoint and to avoid overlap and duplication of programs. The Chief formulates and articulates overall plans consolidating sensitive public and Congressional affairs issues on drug law enforcement and Administration matters. Cultivating and maintaining working relationships with the Congress, its committees, subcommittees and staffs is also an important element of this position. The Chief provides advice to the Administrator for his or her liaison with the Congress and prepares testimony for his or her use in appearance before Congressional committees and subcommittees; advises other Administration officials in preparation for appearances before Congressional committees and subcommittees; and informs the Administrator and other pertinent DEA officials of Congressional interest of the problems of drug abuse, law enforcement, regulation of the legitimate drug industry and other activities in which DEA is involved.
This position does not have an education qualification requirement.
