BASIC EDUCATION REQUIREMENT: Applicants must meet A or B below to satisfy the basic education requirement for Oceanographer, all grade levels.
A. Successful completion of a full 4-year course of study in an accredited college or university leading to a bachelor's or higher degree with major study of at least 24 semester hours or the equivalent in oceanography or related discipline such as physics, meteorology, geophysics, mathematics, chemistry, engineering, geology, or biology, plus 20 additional semester hours or the equivalent in any combination of oceanography, physics, geophysics, chemistry, mathematics, meteorology, computer science, and engineering sciences. ** OR
B. A combination of education and experience-course work as shown in "A" above (24 semester hours or the equivalent in oceanography or a related discipline as specified in "A" above, plus 20 additional semester hours or the equivalent in any combination of courses as specified in "A" above), plus appropriate experience and/or additional education for a total of 4 years. The education or combined education and experience must be comparable in type, scope and thoroughness to that acquired through successful completion of a 4-year course of study as described in "A" above. In addition to the basic education requirement as stated above, applicants must meet the following to qualify for the GS-12 level: Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree, -OR - One year of appropriate professional experience that is in or directly related to the duties of the position to be filled is qualifying if it is equivalent to at least the GS-11 level in the Federal service, and if it equipped the applicant with the knowledge, skills and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the position, - OR- a combination of Education and Experience.
Examples of such specialized experience could include experience in any of the following fields: coastal oceanography, morphology, sediment transport, and related processes; graduate- level work or the equivalent field work and laboratory research integrating field observations of oceanography and morphology into numerical models to solve research and applied problems involving (1) making vulnerability assessments associated with coastal change forecasts, (2) evaluating the accuracy of storm vulnerability assessments, (3) making probabilistic updates of coastal change forecasts that using a combination of new data and models to automate the forecast system and (4) conducting detailed research to better understand beach processes during storms for the purpose of improving predictions. Working within broadly defined research scope and objectives; independently define specific problems and methods used in model development; and simulation, integration, assimilation, and analysis that may require innovative and complex approaches. Research contributions could include senior author of at least one scientific research publication in a peer-reviewed research journal and presentation at regional meetings of professional societies.
