Nursing Professional Development Practitioner (NPDP), previously known as Clinical Nurse Educator (CNE), is to provide nursing professional development leadership in the development, coordination and implementation of educational programs that foster staff development and enhance the quality, safety and process of patient care.
NPDP/CNE has responsibility for: collaborating with others in the facility to ensure that educational activities are based upon assessed learning competency needs of clinical staff and trainees, workforce development and priorities identified by VHA, Network, Hines VA Hospital and Education and Nursing Services; providing educational activities and products that are high quality, cost-effective, timely and follow principles of adult learning and customer service; and improving service/organizational performance by evaluating, monitoring and reporting program outcomes. The NPDP role is directly aligned to Education Service under the Supervisor of Nursing Education for NPDP's. The learning environment NPDP/CNE is primarily based in Education Service with direct day to day responsibility to the Supervisor Nursing Education, aligned under the Chief, Education Service. Day to day program oversight in the NPD Learning Environment may include program coordination of programs such as: Nursing Orientation, Transition to Practice, Undergraduate & Graduate Affiliate Nursing programs, Nursing and Clinical Scholarships, CPR/ACLS, and other Learning environment programs for the VA. The Practice environment NPDP supports clinical practice with primary day to day duties communicated through the Chief of the clinical Practice environment. Nursing Chief will communicate and collaborate with Nursing Education, as needed, for scheduling clarification to support the overall facility and service educational needs. Day to day duties in the NPDP Practice environment can include NPD support for clinical practice areas such as: Long Term Care, Acute & Critical Care, Emergency Services, Outpatient/CBOC, Spinal Cord Injury/Rehabilitation, and other VA practice environments, as assigned by Education Service and Hines VA. Serve as a member of facility, VISN, or national councils/committees and prepare reports as needed.
Work Schedule:
3 Full Time Positions; 80 hours per biweekly pay period each.

Edward Hines, Jr. VA Hospital, located 12 miles west of downtown Chicago on a 147-acre campus, offers primary, extended and specialty care and serves as a tertiary care referral center for VISN 12. Specialized clinical programs include Blind Rehabilitation, Spinal Cord Injury, Neurosurgery, Radiation Therapy and Cardiovascular Surgery. The hospital also serves as the VISN 12 southern tier hub for pathology, radiology, radiation therapy, human resource management and fiscal services. Hines VAH currently operates 483 beds and six community based outpatient clinics in Kankakee, Hoffman Estates, Oak Lawn, Aurora, LaSalle, and Joliet. Over 875,000 patient visits occurred in fiscal year 2018 providing care to over 57,000 Veterans, primarily from Cook, DuPage and Will counties.
Hines serves as an educational hub with more than 1660 trainees/year from many clinical disciplines. Loyola University Schools of Medicine and Nursing are the major academic affiliates in addition to 41 other affiliations with other universities and colleges which cover 71 programs.
