This position serves as a Fire Management Officer for a park or group of parks with a complex fire management program. The incumbent provides overall leadership, coordination, and direction for wildland fire management, aviation management, and prescribed fire. The incumbent serves as a recognized leader in the fire management and fire science profession and plans for and manages an intense and comprehensive program that performs the full range of fire management activities. Routinely manages simultaneous operations on large, complex wildfire suppression incidents, long-term monitoring of unplanned ignitions, and one or more large, complex prescribed burning projects. These operations require complicated planning and interagency coordination, and routine mobilization of external resources.
Much of the work is sedentary in nature and performed at a desk. The incumbent is required to walk over rough and rocky terrain in any type of weather to direct operations on prescribed fires and wildland fires.
There is no substitution of education for experience at the grade level(s) of this announcement.
To demonstrate you meet the basic education requirement, you must submit a legible copy of transcripts from an accredited institution with your name, school name, credit hours, course level, major(s), and grade-point average or class ranking. Physical Demands: The work is normally sedentary but often requires long hours of varied shifts during fire emergencies. Occasional field assignments may include long periods of standing or walking over rough terrain.
Working Conditions: Most work is performed in an office setting. Field assignments include work at fire locations with exposure to smoke and inclement weather. Work may require frequent flying in a small fixed wing and rotary wing aircraft. Incumbent will adhere to all safety rules and regulations as prescribed in manuals/supplements or by the designated Safety Officer.
This is a secondary-administrative firefighter position under the special retirement provisions of 5 U.S. C. 8336 (c) (CSRS) and 5 U. S. C. 8412 (d) (FERS). PLEASE NOTE: Applicants may meet qualification requirements, but may not be eligible for special retirement coverage. If such an applicant is selected, they will be placed in the regular retirement system. To be eligible for Secondary retirement coverage under CSRS, an employee must transfer directly (without a break in service exceeding 3 days) from a primary position to a secondary position. This position is stationed at the South Rim of Grand Canyon National Park located in Northwest Arizona, approximately 60 miles north of Williams and 85 miles northwest of Flagstaff at an elevation of 7,000 feet. Grand Canyon Village has schools K-12, a daycare center, post office, general store, banking facilities, churches, a recreation center, a clinic with resident physicians and several restaurants. The park community consists of some 2,000 people, including employees of the NPS and concessionaires and their family members. There are often employment opportunities for family members in the park and surrounding areas. Complete shopping, educational, medical and professional services are available in Williams and Flagstaff . Recreational opportunities include hiking, river rafting, fishing, cross-country and downhill skiing, and golfing in nearby communities.
