The incumbent provides front line information and interpretive services for visitors in the daily operation of the site. Incumbent performs a variety of duties related to the effective interpretation of the park and to the operation of the facilities. These duties include: assisting those who have lost personal items; administering first aid to injured visitors; gathering information from reporting parties concerning accidents/incidents within the park area and notifying appropriate personnel for further action when necessary; and performing minor maintenance duties to ensure clean, safe, and pleasurable visitation experiences for the public. The incumbent provides support to interpretive and other program personnel such as assisting with special event setup and take down; serving as a member of task and event-oriented teams; providing assistance and support to protection personnel (such as traffic and/or crowd control); and assisting other park staff in the performance of work such as time and attendance reporting, travel assistance, and other administrative functions. Under the supervision of higher graded employees, helps present talks providing general information based on the interpretive themes of the park. Programs are generally brief and given to small groups of visitors. They cover a specific topic and utilize previously prepared research and documentation prepared by park staff or others. Operates information desk at the Visitor Center. Greets visitors, provides basic orientation to the site and local area, provides safety messages, responds to questions in person and by telephone, operates park radio, assists with trip planning and issues backcountry camping permits, works in the cooperating association sales area, and restocks supplies. Uses and maintains audio/visual equipment and other interpretive equipment and keeps equipment in operational order. Utilizes computers and completes accurate visitor statistics. Maintains bulletin boards and various interpretive exhibits. Serves as designated fee collection officer. Issues/sells interagency Senior, Access, and Annual Passes. Accurately maintains records, passports, and funds according to guidelines. Under the supervision of higher graded employees, performs opening and closing shift functions, completes shift reports, safeguards funds collected and personal accountable stock.

Physical Demands: Standing for long periods of time, walking, bending, lifting of moderately heavy items and sedentary work is required. Mental stress and physical fatigue occur due to high volume of personal contacts and the responsibility of dealing with large amounts of money.
Working Conditions: Work is often performed in small, outdoor structures with open windows which results in exposure to extremes of temperature, rain, snow, wind, and direct sunlight. Park areas may be geographically located in areas of high elevation, rugged terrain or dense populations. High levels of vehicle noise and emissions may exist during heavy visitation periods. Duties may be performed alone in isolated locations.

Apostle Islands National Lakeshore is located in rural Northern Wisconsin approximately 75 miles east of Duluth, Minnesota. School grades K-12 are located in Bayfield, Washburn (12 miles) and Ashland (26 miles). A hospital and other medical facilities are available in the immediate area. Rental housing is scarce. Moderate priced homes are available in Washburn and Ashland. Temperatures range from mid 80s in the summer to sub-zero in the winter. Summer and winter recreation activities are numerous.
The Northern Great Lakes Visitor Center is located outside Ashland, Wisconsin approximately 65 miles east of Duluth, Minnesota. School grades K-12 are located in Ashland. A hospital and other medical facilities are available in the immediate area. Rental housing is limited.
