This position is part of the Cameron Prairie National Wildlife Refuge, Bell City, Louisiana. As a Forestry Tech in the Fire Management Organization, you will serve as a senior technician located on a wildland fire module or crew. You will provide leadership and oversight of fire suppression management control work. This position will also help to achieve a reduction of hazardous fuels by conducting prescribed burns to reduce the fuels located in the Southwest Louisiana NWR Complex.

Major duties include but are not limited to:
Direct and perform prescribed burn operations.
Gather and consider information on weather data, topography, fuel types, and fire behavior in responding to wildland fire incidents.
Make initial evaluation of fire situations.
Responsible for coordinating and providing oversight in the operation and maintenance of specialized equipment used to respond to wildland fires and prescribed burns.
Conduct and lead crew proficiency checks and drills.
Supervisory Duties:
Assure that production and accuracy requirements are met.
Approve leave requests
Plan work to be accomplished by subordinates.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
PROOF OF EDUCATION: All applicants who are using education or a combination of education and experience to qualify must submit copies of official or unofficial transcripts which include grades, credit hours earned, major(s), grade point average or class ranking, institution name, and student name. Your qualifications will be evaluated on the following competencies (knowledge, skills, abilities and other characteristics):
Knowledge of instruction techniques sufficient to present wildland fire suppression and prescribed fire training.
Ability to operate four wheel drive pickup trucks and may require the ability to operate a fire engine.
Knowledge of accepted fire safety practices and procedures to prevent injury and loss of life.
Basic knowledge of tactical methods and techniques for use of water and additives in controlling and mopping-up fires in order to efficiently and effectively accomplish operations where water is in short supply.
Knowledge and skill of standard first aid procedures sufficient to perform preliminary first aid and triage as necessary.
Wildland firefighting knowledge such as, but not limited to, fie engine and pump operations, hose lays, handcrew perations and/or helicopter operations to enable the incumbent to function in assigned capacities and to instruct or supervise others.
Knowledge of appropriate act requirements to include the Equal Opportunity Act, Civil Rights Act, Age Discrimination in Employment Act, Rehabilitation Act, 29 CFR 1604. 1l(a) Sexual Harassment sufficient to supervise a diverse workforce.
Knowledge such as, chainsaw operation and repair, long line operations, rappelling, pump operation and water handling used in response to wildland urban interface situations, and in wildland fire management and prescribed burns.
