Major Duties Include:
Assist in the planning of prescribed burn projects.
Direct the use of specialized firing equipment (e.g. fusees, drip torches, flares, and terra torch)
Gather information on weather data, topography, fuel types, and fire behavior in responding to wildland fire incidents.
Make initial evaluation of fire situation.
Perform operation and maintenance of specialized equipment used to respond to wildland and prescribed fire situations.
Assist in conducting formal training.
Participate in crew proficiency checks and drills.
Exercise delegated supervisory authorities and responsibilities.
This key fire management position is categorized under the Interagency Fire Program Management (IFPM) Standard as a Prescribed Fire and Fuels Specialist, complexity level low. Prior experience in wild land firefighting is required in order to carry out the duties of this position. You will not be considered for this position if you do not have prior wild land firefighting experience.

Minimum Qualifications for GS-6:
One year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-5 level in the Federal Service demonstrated by performing range or forest fire control, prevention, or fuels management work. Examples of qualifying specialized experience include performing wildland fire suppression, preparedness, prevention, monitoring, hazardous fuels reduction and prescribed fire as a senior wildland firefighter crewmember
OR
Successfully completed six (6) months (9 semester hours, 13.5 quarter hours or the equivalent) of graduate level study at an accredited college or university in a field directly related to this position.
OR
Have an equivalent combination of experience and education, as described above, which when combined meets 100% of the qualification requirements.
Minimum Qualifications for GS-7:
Possess one year of specialized wildland fire experience equivalent to the GS-6 grade level in the Federal service.
OR
Have completed at least 1 year (18 semester hours) of graduate level education directly related to this position
OR
Possess an equivalent combination of graduate education AND qualifying experience.
Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
Promotion Potential: This position involves a multi-grade career ladder. The major duties listed represent the full performance level of GS-7. At lower grade levels, you will perform assignments of a more limited scope and with less independence. You will progressively acquire the background necessary to perform at the full performance level of GS-7. Promotion is at the discretion of the supervisor and is contingent upon satisfactory performance, availability of higher level work, and availability of funds.The selectee may be promoted without further competition when all regulatory, qualification, and performance requirements are met. Selection at a lower grade level does not guarantee promotion to the full performance level.

Public Land Corps (PLC) Hiring Authority:

(1) In order to be eligible for PLC non-competitive status, a former member of the PLC must provide documentation, as part of their application, verifying their eligibility and meet the following criteria:

Knowledge and experience in prescribed fire operations, including burning techniques, fuels inventory, preparation of bum plans, prescriptions, firing procedures, holding strategies and site rehabilitation; and the effects of wildland fire management and fire suppression activities and how they affect natural and cultural resources.
Knowledge of accepted fire safety practices and procedures.
Knowledge of the effects of fire on natural and cultural resources. Understanding of fire ecology principles as they apply to local fuel and vegetation types, fire research methods and procedures, fire weather, smoke management, fire behavior and the methods used to monitor, describe, analyze and predict fire behavior.
Skill in the care, maintenance, and utilization of wildland fire suppression and prescribed fire and fuels treatment equipment.
