The incumbents will assist in storm patrol, cleaning out of roadside ditches, and clearing of culverts before and after storm events as an ongoing effort after a devastating fire burned all of the park's land. In preparation of storm events, the incumbents will take preventative measures to clear drainage features of trees, brush, burned and downed logs, and rocks and debris. Incumbents will assist Heavy equipment operators in installing rock armor to drainage areas and culvert inlets as necessary. Incumbent shall assist heavy equipment operators as a ground crew to accomplish these duties. There are many NPS-maintained roads and road-stream crossings within the fire perimeter at risk of inundation, debris deposition, culvert plugging, flood damage and other post-fire related impacts from elevated flows carrying sediment and debris. Incumbents assess for any potential damages to the roads and infrastructure such as unplugging culverts that may have caused stream diversions onto the roads surface. If the culverts are plugged or damaged; then the areas will be cleaned out immediately to avoid further damage during the next rainfall event. Additionally, other values at risk (buildings, water supply facilities, diversion structures, etc.) adjacent to channels will be assessed by the incumbent during storm patrols.
As directed by the supervisor, in addition to other duties will assist in: 1) removing damaged portions of walls or other similar architectural features in preparation for repair or implementation of new wet/dry walls; 2) implementing prescribed preservation treatments (excavating, resetting, wet/dry laying rock, etc.); and 3) recording the location, time, materials, and labor involved in the treatment process. Incumbent is responsible for selecting the proper tools and materials as instructed and maintains responsibility for keeping all tools and equipment utilized in a clean, serviceable, and safe condition. Incumbent is required to work in a safe manner for the protection of self and fellow workers, particularly when using mechanical tools and equipment. Duties will also include general trail maintenance such as clearing of drainage features, out sloping trail tread, logging and brushing of trails, bridge repair and/or construction, routine painting, rough carpentry, janitorial, trash pick-up, raking of trail tread, and transporting construction materials.
There is no substitution of education for experience for Wage Grade (WG) positions.

Physical Demands: Heavy physical exertion is frequently required in bending, lifting, and using hand and power tools in trail work. Examples of typical strenuous activity, include frequently lifting and carrying objects weighing up to 100 pounds., carrying and rolling rocks and logs, moving rocks of several tons with rock bars, using hammers to crush or shape rock, and using shovels extensively; frequently walks up to 20 miles daily; and must not have potential emergency medical problems that could complicate work in remote areas for extended periods of time
Working Conditions: Incumbent must have the ability to live and work effectively in isolated backcountry areas in close contact with small numbers of people. Incumbent must live and work out-of-doors on projects including mountainous terrain up to 14,000 feet in elevation in all extremes of weather. Trail work is dusty and hazardous conditions may exist when moving rock, working in and around rock slide areas, working around explosives, falling and bucking trees, and working around machinery.
