This is an internship for students who have recently been accepted in or are currently enrolled at least half-time in a certificate or degree seeking program in an accredited college/university, graduate, or professional school with the intent to pursue a degree in engineering or a related engineering field. Half-time is typically 6 semester hours for undergraduates but may be determined by the school.
These positions are designed to provide a career-oriented introduction to the background, philosophy, concepts, and scope of the Forest Service engineering programs and a practical understanding of the policies of the employing organization. Assignments are developmental in nature and, in conjunction with formal education, the employee will gain the necessary competencies for a career in civil engineering.

Individuals who are enrolled must be taking at least a half-time academic course load leading to a degree or certificate. A certificate program is defined as a post-secondary education, in a qualifying educational institution, equivalent to at least one academic year of full-time study that is part of an accredited college-level, technical, trade, vocational, or business school curriculum.
Candidates must meet all the qualification requirements by the closing date of the announcement. The minimum qualification requirements for each grade level of this vacancy announcement are described below:

This position has a positive education requirement. The student must be currently enrolled in a Engineering related degree program that will satisfy on graduation the specific requirements in the qualification standard for the position.
Degree: Engineering. To be acceptable, the program must: (1) lead to a bachelor’s degree in a school of engineering with at least one program accredited by ABET; or (2) include differential and integral calculus and courses (more advanced than first-year physics and chemistry) in five of the following seven areas of engineering science or physics: (a) statics, dynamics; (b) strength of materials (stress-strain relationships); (c) fluid mechanics, hydraulics; (d) thermodynamics; (e) electrical fields and circuits; (f) nature and properties of materials (relating particle and aggregate structure to properties); and (g) any other comparable area of fundamental engineering science or physics, such as optics, heat transfer, soil mechanics, or electronics.
