The position is located at the Range Management Research Unit (RMRU), Jornada Experimental Range, Las Cruces, New Mexico. The mission of RMRU is to develop ecologically-based knowledge systems and technologies for management, conservation, monitoring, and assessment of western rangelands.
The incumbent will conduct research and investigate the use of vegetation phenology to predict ecosystem responses to changes in climate and soil health. The incumbent will formulate phenological indicators of gradual and abrupt changes in primary production that integrate remotely-sensed imagery and ground-based observations. The ideal candidate will have experience with remotely-sensed data, modeling of spatial and/or time series data, and land surface modeling. The incumbent will also possess experience working with large datasets and data mining approaches and an understanding of plant ecology/phenology is desirable.

This is a temporary appointment with an initial not to exceed date of 2 years. An extension of the appointment up to a total of 4 years may be possible with no further competition.
• Selectee must be able to obtain and maintain a security clearance. If selected you may be subject to a National Agency Check and Inquiry (NACI) and a credit report inquiry.
This position requires a Ph.D in Ecology or a related field of study that has equipped the applicant with the necessary knowledge, skills and abilities to perform the duties and responsibilities of the position.
GS-0408: Degree in biology, or a related field of science underlying ecological research that included at least 30 semester hours in basic and applied biological sciences. These hours must have included at least 9 semester hours in ecology, and 12 semester hours in physical and mathematical sciences.
Applicants must meet basic Office of Personnel Management (OPM) Qualification Standard's requirements of the scientific discipline necessary to perform the duties and responsibilities of the position.
