These positions are located in Harpers Ferry Center, in the Museum Conservation Services and Collections Program ath Harpers Ferry Center. This program works in close collaboration with parks to conserve museum collections in support of the National Park Service mission.This position conserves artifacts that represent our cultural heritage an have significant monetary as well as historical value.

Duties
As a Conservator you will:
- Perform the full range of professionally accepted conservation work.
- Assesses cultural conservation concerns in a variety of settings and involving a variety of museum materials, e.g., paper, books, photographs, textiles, wooden objects, metal objects. ethnographic materials, organic artifacts, armaments, mechanical artifacts, decorative art objects, etc.
- Make preservation decisions that preserves and maximizes the useful lifespan of museum objects.
- Communicate technical and topical issues.
- Carrying out complex assignments by protecting museum materials and ensuring their proper storage, handling, conservation, and exhibition.

Prior to your first official motor vehicle operation, and again every year thereafter (or more frequently if management determines such need exists), you will be required to sign an affidavit certifying to your possession of a valid State issued driver's license that is current and has not been revoked, suspended, canceled, or otherwise disqualified in any way to prohibit your operation of a motor vehicle. You will also submit a photocopy of your valid State issued driver's license prior to your first official motor vehicle operation, and again every year, or more frequently if management determines such need exists. Lastly, you may be required to submit (within a State sealed envelope or submitted directly by the State authorities), and at your own expense, all certified driving records from all States that discloses all valid driver's licenses, whether current or past, possessed by you. Please indicate in your application whether you possess a valid State driver's license.
- You will be required to complete a one-year probationary period.
- You may be required to travel overnight away from home one week per month. You must obtain a government charge card for travel purposes.
- You may be required to complete training and obtain/maintain a government charge card with travel and/or purchase authority.
Qualifications
To qualify for this position at the GS-12 grade level, you must possess all of the following minimum qualifications by close of the announcement:
EXPERIENCE: At least one full year of specialized experience comparable in scope and responsibility equivalent to the GS-11 grade level in the Federal service (obtained in either the public or private sectors). Specialized experience is experience that has equipped the applicant with the knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the position. For this position, specialized experience must includes: leading and performing complex conservation techniques; conducting extensive research in the development and design of improved methods and techniques impacting the field of conservation; preparing training courses; writing comprehensive collection condition surveys and other related documents and publishing technical papers and articles regarding new developments in the field of conservation/preservation.
Volunteer Experience: Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
You must include months, years and hours per week worked to receive credit for your work and/or volunteer experience. One year of specialized experience is equivalent to 12 months at 40 hours per week. Part-time hours are prorated. You will not receive any credit for experience that does not indicate exact hours per week or is listed as "varies".

Physical Demands: Works in laboratory environment and incurs some physical exertion such as long periods of standing, recurring bending, stooping, stretching, reaching, climbing ladders, lifting, or similar activities. Use of physical strength may be required to move and lift heavy objects. Position demands exceptional manual dexterity when performing delicate conservation treatment.
Working Conditions: Work is performed in a laboratory setting, in collections storage areas, and in field situations at a park or another site, as required. many park collections are in remote locations with limited facilities. Work may involve contact with organic solvents and potentially hazardous equipment and is expected to follow lab and workshop protocols. Fume hoods and personal protection equipment are provided. Travel for exhibit installation, artifact assessment, and preservation planning is associated with this position.
