This position is in NASA's Pathways Intern Program which provides students with the opportunity to explore NASA careers and gain meaningful developmental work experience.
The selected Pathways Intern will be a member of the GRC Safety and Mission Assurance (SMA) community in the Reliability and System Safety Engineering Branch. The Branch is responsible for all aspects of safety that are related to programs and projects being supported by the Center.

As an intern in the Safety and Mission Assurance Branch, you will be an integral part of the System Safety Team that provides oversight on NASA’s next generation space vehicle by supporting the European Space Agency (ESA) Service Module (ESM) and focusing on the Propulsion Subsystem (PSS). You will support a number of activities related to SMA including:
• System trade studies on topics such as Failure Tolerant Valves, Sensors, Ground Servicing, Parallel System Design, and other propulsion hardware elements with a specific emphasis on avionics and firmware.
• Developing or reviewing Failure Modes and Effects Analysis (FMEAs) and Hazard Analysis (HA). Examples may include history analyses, fault trees, root cause analyses, probabilistic analyses, FMEAs and Hazard Reports (HRs). Other responsibilities include
• Phased reviews of FMEAs and HAs from Airbus and Lockheed-Martin, or in support of payloads flying on the International Space Station (ISS).
• Monitoring and, in time, briefing diverse boards and panels, such as the SMA Working Group and a series of Control Boards. The groups must be monitored so that the SMA team understands the current decisions and directions of the Program and the impacts of these decisions.
• You are required to sign a Pathways Participant Agreement.
• You must have at least one calendar year remaining prior to completing your degree requirements by the start date of your appointment.
• This appointment will start no earlier than May 2018. Applicants who indicate a graduation date prior to May 2019 will be found ineligible. The expected completion date you enter in the NASA Supplemental Questionnaire will be used to make this determination.
• You will be required to undergo a pre-employment background investigation.
Interns may work schedules not to exceed 1,040 hours per year (part-time or full-time on an intermittent basis). The supervisor and intern will agree on a formally-arranged schedule of school and work rotations. A rotation is a defined period of work or school study, usually a semester, a summer, or a quarter in length.

To be eligible for this position, you must be pursuing a degree in Aerospace Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering or Systems Engineering at an accredited educational institution.
Degrees in Engineering Technology are not qualifying for this position. Engineering degrees must be from a college or university school of engineering with at least one curriculum accredited by the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET) as a professional engineering curriculum. *Majors in Electrical Engineering or Systems Engineering are qualifying for conversion if the curriculum includes or is supplemented by nine semester hours (or the equivalent) in machine design, mechanics, hydraulics, dynamics, thermodynamics, mechanical design, or mechanical measurement.
Interns may be promoted to higher grades based on the amount of education completed and acceptable performance. However, promotions are not guaranteed.
