This position is in NASA’s Pathways Intern Program which provides students with the opportunity to explore NASA careers and gain meaningful developmental work experience. This position is for an Engineering Student Trainee in the Communications and Intelligent Systems Division of the Advanced High Frequency Branch at the NASA Glenn Research Center (GRC).
The Advanced High Frequency Branch conducts research and development in the areas of Radio Frequency (RF) devices and circuits including antennas, high power and low noise amplifiers, and RF propagation for aerospace communications. Includes development, test and characterization of RF devices and components such as solid state power amplifiers, power combiners, RF communication circuits for bio-medical applications, semiconductor and superconducting receivers and ferroelectric devices, at microwave, mm-wave and THz frequencies. Develops technologies in support of the next generation space communications architecture, such as superconducting quantum interference filter (SQIF) receivers and Ka-band multi-access antenna arrays. Facilities include planar and cylindrical near-field, far-field and compact antenna ranges, microwave/millimeter-wave device and circuit characterization laboratory, and RF propagation laboratory.

The student will design, develop, and test antennas including phased arrays, Radio Frequency (RF) mixed-signal, and hybrid RF/Optical circuits and RF components such as solid state power amplifiers to address the needs of emerging aerospace communication technology areas for future NASA missions. Design, simulation, and modeling of components and devices pertinent to the aforementioned communication technologies will be performed using various electromagnetic simulations tools such as HFSS and Microwave Studio, while the experimental, testing and verification work will be performed using state of the art RF and RF/Optical instrumentation and characterization systems including antenna ranges.
• Available to work at least 640 hours prior to completion of degree.
• Required to sign a Pathways Participant Agreement.
• Have at least one year remaining before completing degree requirements.
• Expected to start no earlier than December 2017. Applicants who indicate a graduation date prior to December 2018 will be found ineligible.
To be eligible for this position, you must be pursuing a degree in Electrical Engineering or Electronics Engineering at an accredited educational institution. Degrees in engineering technology are not qualifying for this position. Engineering degrees must be from a college or university school of engineering with at least one curriculum accredited by the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET) as a professional engineering curriculum.
