The Burlington Lakeside VA Clinic in Vermont is seeking a Primary Care Nurse Practitioner/Physician Assistant.
The incumbent is accountable for providing primary care and follow-up care for a prescribed number of patients with an emphasis on maintenance and promotion of optimal wellness and the coordination of care across the continuum of health care.
He/she will be accountable for adhering to the established policies,
standards of care and practice and achieving the goals for the Clinical
Guidelines and Prevention Indicators. He/she utilizes advanced skills in
assessment, problem identification and clarification, treatment , planning and
implementation of the patient's treatment plan. He/she will have prescription
authority with a scope of practice. He/she provides care for Veterans ranging
in age from 18 through the geriatric years, taking into consideration
diagnosis, psychosocial, spiritual and cultural issues. Works in collaboration with other members of the health care team to improve
the quality of care delivered to Veterans.
Routine duties may include all or some of the following:
a. Performing initial history and physical examinations and assessing health status on outpatients. Documenting all visits in the electronic medical record is required. Regular review of the care rendered to outpatients will also be accomplished by the supervising physician.
b. Screening outpatients to determine need for further follow-up outpatient care. May also screen patients to determine the need for hospital admission, however, concurrence must be made by supervising physician or alternate.
c. Providing ongoing outpatient care for assigned patients.
d. Screening outpatients to determine the need for further heath care including appropriate consultations where such need is apparent.
e. Ordering and interpreting when appropriate diagnostic studies such as laboratory tests, xrays, electrocardiograms, and other specialized tests or studies to detect abnormalities and/or screening.
f. Carrying out health promotion and disease prevention activities.
g. Initiating and expediting requests for consultations and scheduling special tests and studies.
h.. May counsel patients on VA policy of living wills, Do Not Resuscitate, and Do Not Incubate.

Nurse Practitioner Qualifications:

Education or Training: Applicants must be graduates of a school of professional nursing approved by the appropriate state agency accredited by National League for Nursing Accrediting Commission (NLNAC) or Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE) and possess a current, full, active, and unrestricted registration as a professional Nurse Practitioner in any state, territory, or commonwealth. Additionally, successful completion of formal education program which prepares nurses to function in an advanced practice setting is required. Certification by a national certifying organization (ANA, etc.) as an advanced practice nurse is also required.
Nurse Practitioner (NP): A nurse practitioner must be licensed or otherwise recognized as a nurse practitioner in a State, possess a master’s degree from a program accredited by the NLNAC or CCNE, and maintain full and current certification as a nurse practitioner from the American Nurses Association or another nationally recognized certifying body. (2) Recent PA graduates who are eligible to take the Physician Assistant National Certifying Examination (PANCE) may be employed by VA on a temporary basis (38 U.S.C. 7405), for a period not to exceed two years, as provided in VA Handbook 5005, Part II, Chapter 3, Section G, Paragraph 5.
(3) If a PA’s NCCPA certification is suspended, revoked or expires, the PA must be removed from the occupation which may result in termination of employment.
