HOSP:
The purpose of the position is to perform routine and uncomplicated biological science tasks common to natural resource management. On-the-job training will be provided. Work is office, lab, and field-based, and may be physically strenuous. The ability to carry up to 50 pounds of gear over uneven terrain for prolonged periods/distances is essential to the successful completion of some field activities. Environmental hazards of field work at the park include extreme heat and humidity, sun burn, biting insects, venomous snakes, poisonous plants, and allergens such as mold and pollen. Floods and other extreme weather events have historically occurred in the area. Field and laboratory work may involve exposure to hazardous chemicals. Environmental hazards of office work may include slips and trips, poor workstation ergonomics/posture, eye strain, and noise.
Following instructions and standardized procedures, the incumbent:
-Implements established natural resource management projects. Collects and organizes field data. Ensures adequate quality control of data collected. Performs routine and recurring testing of collected samples. Records all data collected and provides preliminary assessment and classification of the information.
-Makes field observations of natural resource conditions. Provides results to higher-level specialists for analysis. Assists in the preparation of reports, plans, and guidelines, including literature research, descriptions of methods, preparation of graphs and charts, and summaries of findings. Provides logistical support and area orientation for contract or cooperating scientists.
-Installs, operates, and maintains resource management equipment (e.g., tools, traps, and sampling, monitoring, photographic, and laboratory equipment). Inventories equipment, evaluates quality assurance compliance, and calibrates equipment as necessary. Utilizes a variety of computer programs to compile, reduce, store, retrieve, and report data and other resource management information, including natural science research and long-term monitoring projects.
- Maintains and organizes computer databases. Provides advice, assistance, and training to students, student conservation assistants, and volunteers involved in resource management projects and field research. Provides information to other employees and visitors about the natural resource management program May develop and present natural resource-related interpretive programs to the public.
Hot Springs National Park is seeking highly qualified candidates for a seasonal Biological Science Technician position. This position is a full-time, , and the tour of duty may include working occasional weekends, federal holidays, and/or early morning and late night hours. Government housing is not available.

The selectee(s) will implement the park's Integrated Pest Management (IPM) program; coordinating the day-to-day activities of identification, mapping, and removal of invasive weeds using mechanical, chemical, and biological controls; ensuring adequate quality control of collected data; evaluating observed conditions and making preliminary determinations on the cause of the problems; solving logistical or operational problems within the scope of incumbent's knowledge and authority; and assisting in the preparation of reports, plans, and guidelines. The work also includes vegetation monitoring, and revegetation activities as needed.
Field work involves hiking long distances over uneven terrain, in a wide variety of weather conditions. Collects field data using Global Positioning System (GPS) technology, using ArcGIS Pro and other computer programs to track exotic plant control progress, and writes reports. Works with interns and volunteer groups, providing them with advice, assistance, and training on exotic plant treatment techniques. Properly operates resource management equipment, e.g., tools, monitoring, and photographic equipment. Selectee may also assist with a variety of other established natural resource management projects as needed.
Jewel Cave National Monument is located in the southern Black Hills of southwestern South Dakota. It lies approximately 13 miles west of Custer, SD and 24 miles east of Newcastle, WY. It is most noted for its significant underground resources, as well as being recognized as the third longest cave in the world with over 200 miles of mapped and surveyed passages. Its surface features showcase a forested landscape, interspersed with open meadows and wildland fire scars. Limited shopping and medical facilities are available in the nearby gateway communities; however, full service amenities are available in Rapid City, SD, which is located around 50 miles northeast of Custer. Climates range from below freezing in the winter season to mid-90s during the summer months.
