  • Sets up and adjusts all equipment and manually maneuvers the transducer to perform the exam while being cognizant of sound ergonomic practices..
  • Maintains effective control of the ultrasound area by coordinating, planning, organizing, and executing the daily workload potential to expedite workflow patterns within various facets of imaging service and various services in the hospital.
  • Perform a variety of diagnostic ultrasound exams/procedures both in the department and in a portable setting.
  • Evaluates the nature of critical and emergency procedures.
  • Advises radiologists or referring physician of significant abnormalities that would require the immediate attention and visualization while the patient is undergoing examination. Protocols examinations for appropriateness, troubleshooting requests and closely interacting with referring physicians and radiologists.
  • Performs ultrasound examinations of the abdomen, neck, chest and extremities, retroperitoneal space for the purpose of acquiring high quality examinations.
  • Performs routine informatics tasks using PACS, CPRS, VISTA and imaging systems work lists for the purpose of maintaining accurate ultrasound records.
  • Makes multiple simultaneous settings and adjustments in operation of equipment to insure accurate results.
  • Follows established cleanliness and sterilization standard operating procedures (SOPs) for ultrasound transducers (probes), tables etc.
  • May be required to perform complex diagnostic procedures for which there may be no specific guidelines.
  • Assists the radiologist in the performance of cyst punctures, aspiration biopsies, and catheter placements for the purpose of diagnostic treatment using ultrasound techniques. This requires the use of surgical sterile techniques, syringes, needles, contrast, etc.
  • Develops and maintains patient prep procedures so that patients and clinical in-patient wards and outpatient clinics understand the proper preparations of ultrasound examinations in an effort to minimize delays of examinations.
  • Explains examinations to be performed to the patients so that an understanding of the purpose of the study as well as any requirements of the patients is thoroughly understood.
  • Gathers related information from patient medical records, previous ultrasound examinations, other diagnostic imaging modalities, etc. so that correlation of examination to other studies may be made by the radiologist in diagnosis and recommendation of treatment for medical disorders.
  • Distributes ultrasound examinations and related information to the radiologist responsible for the interpretation of the exams.
  • Required to operate ancillary diagnostic ultrasound imaging equipment such as peripheral vascular diagnostic systems.
  • Maintains adequate supplies so that examinations are not delayed due to the lack of necessary equipment and supplies.
  • Participates in the training of physicians, students, and radiology technicians so that these individuals may acquire an understanding of the principals of ultrasound and how it relates to other diagnostic exams.
  • Must be aware of and practice the safety policy/procedure of the medical center and participate in quality assurance activities as directed.

Pay: Competitive salary and regular salary increases When setting pay, a higher step rate of the appropriate grade may be determined after consideration of higher or unique qualifications or special needs of the VA (Above Minimum Rate of the Grade).
Paid Time Off: 37-50 days of annual paid time offer per year (13-26 days of annual leave, 13 days of sick leave, 11 paid Federal holidays per year)

Parental Leave: After 12 months of employment, up to 12 weeks of paid parental leave in connection with the birth, adoption, or foster care placement of a child.

Qualifications

Basic Requirements:

  • United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
  • English Language Proficiency. Medical Instrument Technicians must be proficient in spoken and written English in accordance with chapter 2, section D, paragraph 5a, this part.
  • Foreign Education: To be creditable, education completed outside the U.S. must have been submitted to a private organization that specializes in the interpretation of foreign educational credentials and such education must have been deemed at least equivalent to that gained in conventional U.S. programs. Specialized developmental experience obtained under supervision of appropriately certified individuals may be credited at higher levels and is addressed in individual appendices.
Diagnostic Ultrasound Technicians operate diagnostic ultrasonic scanning equipment to produce cross sectional and two dimensional pictures of internal organs and body structures used to diagnose diseases and other medical conditions. Registration is offered by Cardiovascular Credentialing International (CCI) or by the American Registry of Diagnostic Medical Sonographers (ARDMS).

GS-9-Medical Instrument Technician (Diagnostic Ultrasound). In addition to the core competencies defined at the GS-8 full performance level, positions at this grade may be lead, supervisory, or non-supervisory with specialized advanced knowledge and assignments.

Experience GS-9 - At least 1 year of experience comparable to the next lower grade level GS-8, which is directly related to the duties of the position to be filled, and must fully meet the KSAs at that level. This would be specialized experience which demonstrates possession of the knowledge required in order to provide all aspects of diagnostic ultrasonography services. In addition, the candidate must demonstrate the following technical KSAs and the potential to acquire the assignment specific KSAs designated by an asterisk (*):
  • Assignment GS-8. This represents the full performance level for medical instrument technician (diagnostic ultrasound). At this level the technician is required to perform a full range of procedures including special complicated examinations for which there are no standard instructions or procedures. They perform independent portable ultrasound examinations in the intensive care units, emergency room, surgery, and throughout the Medical Center when required. They also work independently on evenings, nights, and weekend tours of duty as scheduled and/or when on call,
  • Demonstrated Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities GS-8
    1. Ability to perform diagnostic ultrasound examination on multiple areas of the body, including, but not limited to, the abdomen, pelvis, transvaginal, chest, small parts, thyroid, breast, and scrotum.
    2. Ability to perform vascular studies such as vertebral, renal artery, aortic aneurysm, portal-systemic shunts, etc.
    3. Ability to assist radiologists with biopsy procedures determining the location, depth, and required needle angle for the lesion to be sampled.
    4. Ability to assist in surgical procedures and fluid aspirations.
Demonstrated Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities. GS-9- KSAs 1, 2, and 3 are appropriate for all positions at this level. KSAs 4 and 5 are to be used in accordance with their appropriateness for the specific assignment.
1. Knowledge of the more complex examination and treatment procedures and techniques in order to provide training and supervision in these procedures, to evaluate and initiate performance improvement projects, and to write policies, procedures, and protocols that pertain to diagnostic ultrasonography.
*2. Knowledge of JCAHO and other regulatory requirements.
3. Ability to communicate effectively and professionally with employees at varying grade levels.
*4. Ability to manage and supervise employees.
*5. Ability to provide, or provide for, staff development and training.

Assignments GS-9 For all assignments above the full performance level, the higher-level duties must consist of significant scope, complexity (difficulty), and range of variety, and be performed by the incumbent at least 25% of the time.

Preferred Experience: Registration by Cardiovascular Credentialing International (CCI) or by the American Registry of Diagnostic Medical Sonographers (ARDMS) is highly desirable. Basic Cardiac Life Support (BCLS) and Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certifications are also desirable.
