Duties

Help
  • Ensures information systems reliability and accessibility and prevents and defends against unauthorized access to systems, networks, and data.
  • Identifies developmental and training needs of subordinates, provides or arranges for professional developmental, on-the-job-training or formal training in a timely manner.
  • Participate in meetings, conferences, committees and work groups representing Public Safety Dispatcher team.
  • Plan subordinates' work schedules and sequence of operations for short term periods of time to insure consistent staffing of the 911 Center, and even flow and distribution of work.
  • Receive emergency alarms by telephone, Telecommunications Device for the Deaf (TDD), computer interface, and CAD equipment. Interprets emergency alarm locations, nature of emergencies, etc., and dispatches appropriate emergency response forces.
  • Make frequent critical decisions under highly stressful, time sensitive and emergency conditions independently based upon policy and procedure.
  • Coordinate with the Assistant Fire Chiefs, Watch Commanders and Sergeants of the Guard and advises them on issues of Dispatch Communications.

  • Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
  • Required to work (mission and weather essential) regardless of weather conditions or base closure and to report to the duty station at the regularly scheduled time. The work is performed in a highly stressful, restricted office environment.
  • Required to obtain and maintain Incident Command System (ICS) ICS 100, ICS 300 and ICS 700, within 6 months of employment.
  • Required to obtain and maintain MONACO D21 User and Admin, MONACO Emergency Manager Computer Aided Dispatch User and Admin L3 Harris Symphony Dispatch Console User and Admin and VESTA 4.0 user and Admin within 6 months of employment.
  • Required to obtain and maintain certification in CPR, Emergency Medical Dispatch System, Hazardous Materials Awareness, Telecommunicator I and II, and Virginia Criminal Information Network.
  • Required to obtain and maintain continuous current certification is a condition of employment.
  • Must be a qualified typist.
  • Position is covered by the Civilian Drug Abuse Testing Program. Incumbent is required to sign a DA Form 5019-R, condition of employment for certain civilian positions identified as critical under the Drug Abuse Testing Program.
  • Position may transport personnel to incident locations.
  • Work is performed on an alternate work schedule with rotating shift, which includes weekends and holidays.
  • Individuals must possess and maintain a valid State motor vehicle operator license.
  • Hours of work is subject to irregular and/or rotating shifts, evenings, nights, weekends and holidays. Incumbent is required to work overtime as directed and is subject to recall for emergency overtime.
  • This position may be required to travel.
  • This position is subject to a two (2) years supervisory probationary period.

In order to qualify, you must meet the experience requirements described below. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes 1) Provide dispatch support for Police, Fire and Medical teams; 2) Dispatching assistance and guidance on crucial emergency medical calls; 3) Maintain emergency services dispatch (ESD) personnel procedures; and 4) Maintain telephone and radio communication equipment. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-08).

Proficiency Required:This position requires a qualified typist. A qualified typist can type 40 words per minute based on a 5 minute sample with three or fewer errors.
