This is a developmental position within the Office of Administration (HAD), Federal Highway Administration (FHWA), Department of Transportation (DOT). The position is designed to provide interns with challenging assignments that will broaden their perspectives on issues facing the government and prepare them for future positions throughout the government.
The Pathways Student Intern (Financial Specialist) will support Florida Division's oversight of the finance program by enhancing FHWA's stewardship, ensuring accountability of Federal funds and achieving organizational excellence in delivering the Federal-aid highway program. The FPI plays an integral role in delivering the Federal-aid highway program to the State and direct recipients, and in authorizing Federal reimbursement for transportation projects. You will:
The ideal candidate is a student dedicated to public service and working as a part of the Executive Branch. Ideal candidate is pursuing a graduate degree in financial management, accounting, or budgeting; and is proficient with computer operations and software programs necessary for the creation of spreadsheets and databases. This includes but is not limited to, the knowledge of Microsoft (MS) Word, MS Excel, and E-mail. A working or rudimentary knowledge of PowerBI is also ideal. The candidate has foundational written and oral communication skills and is willing to learn and grow with the FL Division Finance Team.

You must meet the following education requirements for each grade by the start of the internship (anticipated to start Spring/Summer 2024). You may use 2024 in-progress semester/quarter hours to qualify for a higher grade level. Qualifications will be determined based on completed and in-progress hours stated on your unofficial transcript submitted at the time of application. To be qualifying, you must successfully complete and receive credit for the courses and provide an updated official transcript before you enter on duty. Apply to the grade(s) that you will be eligible for and provide the applicable supporting documentation.
*Superior Academic Achievement (Bachelor's degree) - In the upper one-third of graduating class; OR a GPA of 3.0 or higher out of 4.0, as recorded on official transcript, or based on courses completed during final 2 years of curriculum; OR a GPA of 3.5 or higher out of 4.0, based on average of required courses completed in major or required courses in major completed during the final 2 years of curriculum.

WORK SCHEDULE: Pathways intern hours worked cannot interfere with academic studies. Interns may work either full-time or part-time hours.
Additional Information: The Florida Division has a strong history of developing employees. The Division has sponsored several Pathways Interns in previous years, include one in Finance. The intern matriculated to the PDP program and into a successful finance career with FHWA. As Pathways may be an intern’s first ‘real’ job, we want the experience to be enriching, rewarding, and unforgettable. This is an Excepted Service appointment. As a part of the Pathways Internship Program, the appointment may be extended until the selectee's educational program requirements have been completed. The student intern may be converted, without a break in service to a term (time-limited) or permanent appointment upon graduation, to a position that has a career ladder targeted up to the GS-12, provided they are a US citizen who has worked at least 640 hours in an appropriate program and receive a favorable recommendation from the supervisor for retention. There is no guarantee of a permanent position following this internship. The selectee is on a trial period while on a Pathways Internship appointment.
