Duties
The incumbent will work as part of a small team of biologists and biological science technicians in the Bison Program in Yellowstone National Park. The Bison Program monitors the status and health of the park's bison population, implements a brucellosis quarantine program to relocate bison outside the park, coordinates with Tribes and other state and federal agencies to manage bison numbers when animals migrate out of the park, and implements a rangeland health monitoring program.
This vacancy is a great opportunity for an individual's looking to expand their experience in large mammal conservation in the National Park Service.
The incumbent will primarily support the brucellosis quarantine program, which involves capturing bison from the park's population and holding them in fenced pastures to undergo disease testing. The incumbent must be able to work comfortably on foot, in close proximity to wild bison.
The major duties of this position include, but are not limited to:
- Move animals between fenced pastures on foot, monitor the bison for disease, collect fecal samples from animals, operate a squeeze chute, and collect blood and other biological samples.
- Repair and maintain the bison facility.
- Operate large farm equipment to make facility repairs and feed the bison.
- Assist with chemical immobilization of bison.
- Maintain animal health records and use Microsoft software to database, summarize data, and write summary reports.
- Perform observational studies of bison within the park and complete rangeland monitoring surveys.
- Work outside in both hot and cold weather.
- Perform repetitive physical tasks, and lift and hold heavy objects greater than 60 lbs. for long durations.

Physical Demands: The work is partially sedentary with prolonged standing, walking, and bending often required. Heavy items (e.g., packs and equipment) must be lifted and carried on a routine basis.
