About the Position: This position is a Medical Support Assistant (OA)
This position is Term Not to Exceed 13 months with the possibility of annual extensions. It is time limited and may be extended up to a maximum 8 years.

This position will not be made permanent without further competition.

Current permanent Federal Employees applying for a term appointment will converted into a term appointment with NO statutory return rights back to a permanent position.

Duties

Help
  • Complete request forms, manually or automated, for individual patient orders, blood work and other requests.
  • Maintain and monitor patient appointment schedules for the clinic/practice.
  • Receive patients and visitors as the initial point of contact, in person or telephonically.
  • Record and relay messages and/or redirect calls.
  • Maintain all patients' records, both electronic and paper, according to regulation ensuring each entry contains proper patient and health care provider identification.
  • Oversee the clerical duties inherent to the in processing (reception), care and out processing (transition) of outpatients, families/caregivers and guests.
  • Respond to emergency calls and notifies emergency medical personnel.

  • This position has a mandatory seasonal influenza vaccination requirement and is subject to annual vaccination.

Qualifications

In order to qualify, you must meet the education and experience requirements described below. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Your resume must clearly describe your relevant experience; if qualifying based on education, your transcripts will be required as part of your application. Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes entering, manipulating or retrieving information and data from automated systems; redirecting phone calls to appropriate individuals for action; AND maintaining patient records by updating information.
This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-04).
OR
Education: Four years of education above the high school level obtained in an accredited business, secretarial or technical school, junior college, college or university. (Note: You must attach a copy of your transcripts.)
OR
Combination of Education and Experience: A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position as long as the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%. To compute the percentage of the requirements, divide your total months of experience by 12. Then divide your semester hours of education beyond two years (total semester hours minus 60) by 60. Add the two percentages.

Proficiency Required: This position requires a qualified typist. A qualified typist can type 40 words per minute based on a 5-minute sample with three or fewer errors.

Time in Grade Requirement for GS-05:
Candidates may be advanced without time restriction to positions up to GS-5 if the position to be filled is no more than two grades above the lowest grade the employee held within the preceding 52 weeks under his or her latest non-temporary competitive appointment.

FOREIGN EDUCATION: If you are using education completed in foreign colleges or universities to meet the qualification requirements, you must show the education credentials have been evaluated by a private organization that specializes in interpretation of foreign education programs and such education has been deemed equivalent to that gained in an accredited U.S. education program; or full credit has been given for the courses at a U.S. accredited college or university.
