Duties
- Plans, organizes, implements and evaluates NEH's public information campaigns. Works extensively with local, regional and national print and electronic media in building and maintaining a high level of knowledge and understanding of NEH policies, programs, grants, and special initiatives. Develops and maintains good media relations through telephone, written and personal contact, and through participation in the planning and management of pitches, media campaigns, news conferences, media briefings, interviews and special events. Directs social media engagement across platforms.
- Plans, researches and prepares drafts or final versions of informational material such as news releases, media advisories, grant lists, letters, and fact sheets. Assures that appropriate local, regional and national organizations, the general public and constituents are kept regularly and accurately informed about NEH activities. Selects target audiences for the material and assures that NEH prime media contact lists are always current by keeping them under continual review.
- Works with major grantees, including national educational and cultural organizations, universities and state humanities councils in the planning and development of media campaigns and public information strategies. Serves as liaison with public affairs staff in grantee institutions in assuring proper crediting of NEH grants in news releases and other materials.
- Responds proactively and accurately as controversial, sensitive, or critical issues arise. These issues may have a real or potentially negative (or positive) impact on the reputation of the agency and its staff. Recognizes the urgency of handling these issues quickly, and gives accurate information, advice, and solutions to senior agency executives. Adjusts priorities to accommodate fluctuating deadlines and workloads.
- Recommends policy objectives to the Chair's office. Develops long-range plans for the agency's public affairs functions as well as short-range procedures and activities necessary to address immediate needs. Continually analyzes the effectiveness of media relations program and suggests changes to the Director of Strategic Communications and Public Affairs.
- Maintains liaison with NEH division and program directors in order to ensure that the activities of these programs are monitored for the purpose of obtaining information leading to news releases, news conferences and other informational activities. Provides expert advice and counsel to management about informational needs of NEH constituents and the general public. Anticipates the likely reaction of the public to newsworthy developments associated with the work of NEH and its grantees.
- Directs the work of the Office of Public Affairs. Supervises a staff of Public Affairs Specialists and clerical/technical support positions. Performs the full range of supervisory duties including preparing employee performance appraisals. Makes recommendations for pay increases, incentive awards, overtime, and employee travel. Identifies staff developmental and training needs and provides for such development and training.
