The incumbent will supervise employees and/or volunteers. They will plan for, hire, train, and supervise this staff. They will create daily work schedules for and will operate the visitor center or visitor contact station. They will train, mentor and coach staff on creating effective interpretive programming, as well as developing and presenting programming themselves. Interpretative programming will be offered to schools within the local community and in the park.
This position will create and assist in coordinating the creation of digital and print interpretive products, while also training others on the interpretive principles associated with such products. They will assist with creating and coordinating park social media and website content.
The incumbent will assist in maintaining collaborative working relationships with park partners, community organizations, park concessionaire and the park's cooperative bookstore association. Specifically, the incumbent will manage a bookstore operation at their location. They will coordinate special events, as well as collaborating with other District Interpretive Park Rangers on projects. Various administrative duties will also be required, such as purchasing, credit card reconciliation, recording and reporting visitor statistics and gathering information for reports. Additionally, the collection of fees and related activities will be required.
Duties will be developmental in nature when filled below the full performance level.
Physical Demands: The work requires some physical exertion and can involve extensive periods of standing and walking, in some cases over rough surfaces or inclines outdoors or in caves, and carrying backpacks, tools, rescue equipment, or other loads. Some employees may engage in firefighting, search and rescue, and other strenuous activities; these employees may be required to lift or carry equipment weighing more than 50 pounds over long distances. Employees who participate in all-risk operations will be required to meet fitness requirements on a continuing basis.
Working Conditions: The work can include moderate risks or discomforts that require safety precautions (e.g., exposure to extreme temperatures, climates, rough terrain, wild animals, pests, and/or insects). The incumbent may be required to use protective clothing or gear, such as masks, boots, gloves, etc. Some employees may be engaged in all-risk operations and be exposed to high risk and potentially dangerous situations which require a range of safety and other precautions.
