This assignment carries responsibility for providing occupational therapy (OT) evaluation and treatment to veterans in the Residential Rehabilitation Therapy Program (RRTP) according to the SORCC VAMC mission and the Behavioral Health Service Line (BHSL) guidelines. The therapist develops and implements individualized occupational therapy treatment programs for all patients referred for consultation. The therapist may need directions from more experienced therapist with complex or multifactor impairments. He/she works effectively with patients and treatment team members. The incumbent may assist with developing practices and procedures of occupational therapy services that are necessary to plan and direct the wide range of activities relating to the overall operation of an occupational therapy program in the RRTP. The incumbent provides patient care/support services to a population of patients, young adult to geriatric, which is characterized by a significant number of older veterans.
Duties include but not limited to :
Clinical
1. Screening/triaging of OT consults. Evaluating veterans with complex mental and physical health needs to determine current level of functioning using advanced evaluation methodologies, standardized or specialized tests, interview, observation, medical record review, and consultation with other medical providers and treatment teams.
2. Develop an intervention plan based on findings, OT theory and evidence based practice. This plan is to be developed in collaboration with the veteran, providers, and the treatment team as appropriate. The plan will include objective and measurable goals with an established timeframe.
3. Demonstrates knowledge of contemporary occupational therapy across some areas of practice as appropriate as an developing level practitioner.
4. Offers treatment interventions tailored to the veteran's abilities/needs. Designs interventions to promote, modify, maintain or restore occupational performance. This may include group and/or individual treatment.
5. Documents the veteran's response to treatment, therapeutic interventions and the progress toward reaching the desired targeted outcomes as per VA regulations and section guidelines.
Administrative
1. Collaborates with staff throughout the medical center to create an environment that will maximize the veteran's functional abilities and their quality of life.
2. Works effectively with treatment team and other health care providers in coordinating the patient's total care. Serves as full team member on assigned units.
3. Serves as active participant in quality improvement programs. Contribute to interdisciplinary assessments (i.e., FIM, MDS, etc.) and care plans. Assists with the Performance Improvement efforts for the occupational therapy section, following activities that detect and remedy deficiencies in process and outcome of OT services.
4. Demonstrates autonomy in performing responsibilities that include, but are not limited to, monitoring their own workload and clinical volume.
5. Assists RRTP leadership in utilization and management of available space for current, additional or expanding therapy programs.

(a) Bachelor's degree in occupational therapy and two (2) years of experience as an occupational therapist; NOTE: The baccalaureate degree must be from an approved program prior to the AOTA January 1, 2005 decision that the Accreditation Council for Occupational Therapy Education (ACOTE) would only accredit master or doctoral degree programs in occupational therapy. or
(b) Bachelor's degree in occupational therapy and two (2) full years of graduate education in a related field;
NOTE: The baccalaureate degree must be from an approved program prior to the AOTA January 1, 2005 decision that ACOTE would only accredit master or doctoral degree programs in occupational therapy. or
(c) Master's Degree or higher in occupational therapy.
(2) Individuals must be a graduate of a degree program in occupational therapy approved by the ACOTE or predecessor organizations. This is inclusive of an internship (supervised fieldwork experience required by the educational institution). ACOTE is the only accreditation agency recognized by the United States Department of Education and the Council for Higher Education Accreditation. Degree programs may be verified by contacting the American Occupational Therapy Association website or at their office address: American Occupational Therapy Association, P.O. Box 31220, Bethesda, MD 20824-1220.
c. Foreign Graduates. Graduates] of foreign occupational therapy programs meet the requirements of subparagraph [3b(2)] if they have a current, full, active and unrestricted license referred to in subparagraph [3e] of this appendix.
