Boise VA Medical Center (BVAMC) has 4 primary care clinics and one Women's Wellness Clinic at the main facility, 3 CBOCs and 2 Outreach Clinics. These clinics range from small, with 3 or fewer providers, to large with several part time providers, to multi-specialty. Clinic patient populations ranges from 1300-to over 6000. Caldwell CBOC is our largest Primary Care clinic, staffed with 3 Physicians, and 5 advanced practice providers.

There are back-up services available in the emergency room as well as surgery, psychiatry, and medical subspecialties. Patients who need admission to the inpatient wards will be transferred to the admitting house staff team. The physician assistant may sometimes need to work alone but can request assistance from other medical staff (including staff in the Emergency Room or inpatient service when needed.). Shifts may occasionally deviate from the usual 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. shift schedule. The facility is fully computerized and computer skills are required.
There is minimal administrative work, but the physician assistant will be required to attend staff meetings, team meetings, some committee meetings and complete some peer review evaluations. Time will be provided outside of assigned shifts to complete this work.
The major duties of the position include, but are not limited to:
- Perform initial histories and physical examinations on outpatients.
- The collaborating physician will review progress notes as per state medical board and VA requirements.
- Provide ongoing outpatient care for assigned patients.
- Screen outpatients to determine need for further care.
- Prescribe medications within defined scope of practice.
- Order diagnostic studies such as laboratory tests, x-rays, electrocardiograms (EKG's).
- Review needs for and order health promotion and disease prevention activities.
- Initiates respond to and expedite request for consultations, special tests, and studies.
- Provide education and counseling of patients and families in preventive care, medical conditions, and use of prescribed treatments and drugs.

This position is eligible for the Education Debt Reduction Program (EDRP), a student loan payment reimbursement program. You must meet specific individual eligibility requirements in accordance with VHA policy and submit your EDRP application within four months of appointment.
