This is a career-seasonal position and subject to release and recall procedures. A permanent career-seasonal position includes all the benefits of permanent employment but does not provide employment on a full year-round basis. As such, selectee will be in a non-pay/non-duty status for at least 2 weeks to 12 weeks per year based on project requirements or weather conditions. Selectee are guaranteed to work at least 20 pay periods per year but not more than 25 pay periods per year, with the work schedule to be determined upon appointment. The typical season for Olympic National Park is Mid-January to End-November, but can be variable during these months due to project requirements or weather conditions.
This position is in the Facility Management Division of Olympic National Park and reports directly to the Trails Program Manager. The incumbent supervises the park's livestock operation, backcountry toilet maintenance operation and multiple trail crew units that perform trail maintenance throughout the park.
The duty station for the position is Port Angeles, WA. Port Angeles is a small town of 20,000 that has numerous supermarkets, dining options and full-service medical facilities. Shopping at larger box stores is available in Sequim, 15 miles to the east. Housing is available for rent or purchase in Port Angeles, Sequim, and the Joyce area to the west. Interested individuals are encouraged to research the local housing market.
Port Angeles and Sequim are in the rain shadow of the Olympic Mountains and, as such, have relatively modest rainfall and mild year-round weather. The area is known for its world class fishing and hunting. There is also a robust local music and arts scene. Seattle is approximately 2-1/2 hours to the east and Victoria, Canada on Vancouver Island is a one-hour ferry ride to the north.
