The VA Boston Healthcare System (VABHS) is seeking a licensed or license-eligible clinical or counseling psychologist to function as a full-time outpatient staff psychologist in the multidisciplinary General Mental Health (GMH) Program at the Jamaica Plain Campus. Within GMH, the psychologist will provide comprehensive, standardized diagnostic assessments, evidence-based psychotherapy, and crisis intervention services for a demographically diverse Veteran population presenting with a wide range of acute and chronic psychiatric disorders (e.g., anxiety and mood disorders, trauma disorders, personality disorders, substance use disorders, adjustment disorders, psychotic disorders). The psychologist will liaise with other VABHS clinicians/clinical teams to effectively coordinate services for Veterans. The psychologist will contribute to clinical programming within the GMH program. The psychologist will conduct additional direct care activities as needed/requested (e.g., Urgent Care Clinic coverage; compensation and pension examinations, police evaluations).VABHS is a vibrant academic medical center. The psychologist will have ample opportunity to participate in didactic training and clinical supervision of trainees from multiple disciplines (e.g., Psychology, Psychiatry, Social Work). The psychologist may also contribute to clinical research, as well as data-driven program development/evaluation and quality improvement projects.
Clinical Responsibilities (80-85% effort)
1. Direct Service Provision
a. Provides a full range of clinical services including assessment, empirically based
individual and group interventions, education, and treatment planning for Veterans seen
in the GMH Clinic.
b. Performs intake evaluations and offers evidence-based interventions for Veterans with a
variety of mental health disorders (e.g., mood, anxiety, substance use, PTSD and other
trauma-related disorders, psychotic disorders, and personality disorders) in the JP GMH
Clinic.
c. Engages in clinical supervision of psychology trainees (e.g., psychology postdoctoral
fellows, psychology pre-doctoral interns, psychology practicum students). Conducts additional direct care activities as needed/requested (e.g., Urgent Care Clinic
coverage; compensation and pension examinations, police evaluations).
2. Supporting Clinical Activities
a. Participates in GMH JP interdisciplinary team meetings.
b. Completes timely clinical charting and documentation required by the Medical Center,
VISN, and VACO.
c. Contributes to the development of new clinical programming within the GMH program.
d. Collaborates with staff from other mental health and medical clinics on the development
of treatment plans and/or to resolve issues related to coordination of care and appropriate
referral practices.
e. Consults with mental health and other medical center staff on a wide variety of patient
care issues.
f. May provide educational seminars for patients and staff.
g. Works in compliance with local and national performance measures.
ENRICHING ELEMENTS (15-20% EFFORT; DISTRIBUTION DEPENDENT ON
INTERESTS AND QUALIFICATIONS)
1. Academic/Teaching/Training
a. The psychologist will hold an academic title at Boston University and/or Harvard.
b. The psychologist may deliver and/or assist with didactic education.
c. The psychologist may engage in supervision of interdisciplinary trainees (e.g., psychiatry
residents) who conduct direct clinical care.
d. The psychologist will receive continuing education.
e. The psychologist will attend regular GMH rotation training meetings regarding
psychology training.
g. The psychologist may provide research mentoring to trainees.
2. Program Evaluation/Research
a. The psychologist will be a regular consumer of research relevant to the conduct of
evidence-based evaluation and treatment of patients, as well as supervision of trainees.
b. The psychologist will support research programs that are consistent with the mission of
the medical center.
c. The psychologist may participate in program evaluation.
d. The psychologist may participate in or collaborate on scholarly/scientific endeavors in
areas of interest, including preparation of research presentations, manuscripts, and grant
submissions.
3. Other
a. May serve on Medical Center or Healthcare System, VISN, and/or National VA
committees or task forces, as requested.
b. Actively participates in local, state, and/or national professional organizations, assuming
leadership roles, as appropriate.
c. Attends relevant Psychology meetings, as requested and schedule allows.

(2) Quality of Experience. Experience is only creditable if it is post-doctoral experience as a professional psychologist directly related to the duties to be performed. Qualifying experience must also be at a level comparable to or exceeding professional psychology experience at the next lower level.
(3) Part-time Experience. Part-time experience is creditable according to its relationship to a fulltime workweek. For example, a psychologist employed 20 hours per week, or on a half time basis, would receive one full-time workweek of credit for each two weeks of service.
(4) Post-Doctoral Degree Fellowships. Postdoctoral fellowships or residencies are training programs in an advanced area of clinical practice. Training as a fellow or resident is considered to be creditable experience on a year-for-year basis
b. Grade Determinations. In addition to the basic requirements for employment, the following criteria must be met when determining the grade of candidates:
Staff Psychologist, GS-11 (Entry Level)
(a) Experience. None beyond the basic requirements.
(b) Assignment. Staff psychologists at this level diagnose mental disorders, conduct psychological or neuropsychological assessments, treat mental disorders through a variety of modalities, provide adjunctive interventions for treatment of medical disorders, and may conduct research. They may be assigned to any program area. Psychologists who are not licensed must practice under the close supervision of a licensed psychologist.
Staff Psychologist, GS-12 (Developmental Level)
(a) Experience. At least one year of experience as a professional psychologist equivalent to the next lower grade level (GS-11). Psychologists who are not licensed must practice under the supervision of a licensed psychologist but with less intense supervision than at the GS-11 grade level. (b) Demonstrated Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities. In addition to the experience above, the candidate must demonstrate all of the following KSAs:
1. Knowledge of and ability to apply a wide range of professional psychological treatments or assessment methods to a variety of patient populations.
2. Ability to design and implement effective treatment strategies.
3. Ability to incorporate new clinical procedures.
4. Ability to conduct research activities, such as designing and implementing clinical research projects (staff psychologists with specified research job duties).
5. Ability to perform basic research tasks of scholarship and research execution within the context of an established research team, including research participant relations, research documentation, data acquisition, maintenance, and collaboration.
Assignment. Staff psychologists at this level diagnose mental disorders, conduct psychological or neuropsychological assessments, treat mental disorders through a variety of modalities, provide adjunctive interventions for treatment of medical disorders, and may conduct research. They may be assigned to any program area.
Staff Psychologist, GS-13 (Full Performance, Level)
(a) Experience. At least two years of experience as a professional psychologist, with at least one year equivalent to the GS-12 grade level
(b) Demonstrated Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities. In addition to the experience above, the candidate must demonstrate all of the following KSAs:
1. Knowledge of, and ability to apply, professional psychological treatments to the full range of patient populations.
2. Ability to provide professional advice and consultation in areas related to professional psychology and behavioral health.
3. Knowledge of clinical research literature.
Assignment. This is the full performance level for staff psychologists. At this level, psychologists are licensed to practice independently in the provision of psychological services, consulting with peers and supervisors as appropriate. They may be assigned to any VHA program and setting, such as inpatient or outpatient medicine, primary care, surgery, mental health, neurology, rehabilitation medicine, geriatrics, Compensation and Pension, Vet Centers, and the VHA National Center for Organization Development. Psychologists diagnose mental disorders, conduct psychological or neuropsychological assessments, treat mental disorders through a variety of modalities, and provide adjunctive interventions for treatment of medical disorders. Among the modalities provided are individual, family, and group psychotherapies and other interventions such as behavioral health and community interventions. Psychologists consult with medical center staff on a wide variety of patient care issues. Staff psychologists may be involved in program evaluation, teaching, training, and research activities.
Preferred Experience: . Training and experience in the provision of evidence-based psychotherapies) for Depression, CBT for Anxiety, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT)) and experience offering these services in multiple modalities.
