Responsible for proactively managing their caseloads.
Works with a wide range of inmates of varied ages, medical and mental health needs and security levels.
Responsible for providing medical and mental health release planning, social work assessments and evaluations, treatment activities, and evidence-based therapeutic interventions to individuals and groups, as allowed by license and with clinical supervision.
Must demonstrate knowledge of community resources and expertise in resource acquisition and proactively identify and provide psychosocial services to special populations (i.e., disabled, ageing or transgender).
Serves on and participates in specialized mental health and medical services committees and panels as a member of the interdisciplinary team, including Care Coordination and Reentry team, Risk Assessment Panels and Reduction in Sentence committees.
Works closely with a wide variety of individuals and agencies such as attorneys, Federal Probation Officers, physicians/hospital personnel, child welfare agencies, Social Security Administration and Veterans Affairs.
Along with all other correctional institution employees, incumbent is charged with responsibility for maintaining security of the institution. The staffs correctional responsibilities precede all others required by this position and are performed on a regular and recurring basis.

Degree: Social work. Must fulfill all of the requirements for the master's degree in social work in a school accredited by the Council on Social Work Education.
Master's degree with practicum: Applicants who complete all of the requirements for a master's degree in social work that included a practicum are eligible for GL-09.

The Core Value Assessment (CVA) is an in-person assessment that must be facilitated at a Bureau of Prisons Human Resource Servicing office. On the day of the scheduled interview, a CVA will be administered. The applicant assessment must be completed within a 70 minute time period and a passing score of 68 must be obtained. Further employment consideration will not be extended if the applicant fails to complete the examination or fails to achieve a passing score. Note: The Core Value Assessment will not be administered to current BOP employees.
Successful completion of the "Introduction to Correctional Techniques", three-week training course at Glynco, Georgia is required.
