The Epidemiologist is responsible for initiating, designing, implementing, and evaluating epidemiologically valid inquiries and data descriptions supporting aviation communicable disease prevention and response. Enables continuous improvement of medical standards and processes to enhance the safety of the National Aerospace System.
Performs multiple, varying, and complex assignments under the minimal direction of the Manager of the Regional Augmentation Team (RAT) in collaboration with other AAM employees and team members.
Applies experience and comprehensive technical knowledge of epidemiology as well as an understanding of new technologies and methodologies to accomplish assignments and to develop plans and techniques to improve programs and policies. Designs, conducts, and interprets statistical analyses of epidemiological and operational factors associated with communicable diseases, aviation-related illnesses or fatalities, and other aerospace medicine issues that impact medical or operational rulemaking and/or safety guidelines. Understands how epidemiological issues interact with and are affected by other disciplines and considers the objectives of the major subdivision and LOB/SO when developing, integrating, and implementing solutions to diverse, complex problems.
Organizes raw data into forms suitable for epidemiological analysis; organizes and analyzes large sets of aerospace medicine data, with specific knowledge of coding and illness systems. Organizes results of studies into written form for publication, presentation, or dissemination; additionally, formulates policy alternatives and potential interventions indicated by epidemiological analyses. Designs and uses data collection instruments; develops expertise in operational datasets and applies that knowledge to appropriate comparisons of predictor variables to safety outcomes. Defines, plans, and organizes assigned resources to accomplish epidemiological studies. Allocates time and resources to accomplish all tasks within schedules established by the Manager of the RAT. Follows established procedures and methods in epidemiology and statistics for most assignments but applies discretion to select the most appropriate approach or to recommend new approaches.
Contacts are both internal to the Office of Aerospace Medicine, and external to Aviation Safety line of business, stakeholders, and professional organizations. Often represents the Office of Aerospace Medicine and the FAA as a senior technical point of contact.
Work is reviewed rarely, typically through status reports and at project completion. Resolves all but unique technical problems without the intervention of management and in collaboration with other AAM employees. Recommends techniques to address problem situations. Presents findings to the Manager of the Regional Augmentation Team and appropriate AAM managers upon completion of major milestones and tasks. Work activities typically impact directly on the objectives of one or more major programs within the Office of Aerospace Medicine, LOBs/SOs, and may impact on the objectives of the FAA.
As a member of the RAT, the individual is subject to activation for public health operations, which may require irregular work hours, work at locations other than the official duty station, and may include duties other than those specified in the employee's official position description.
Required to have access to information at the Top Secret/SCI level. Will consult with other public health advisors, health officials, senior program officials and other government agency officials regarding the integration and coordination of activities and resources in support of public health protection, disease prevention, and health promotion across the international and national civilian aviation sector including private sector stakeholders.
Performs other related duties as assigned.
Basic Requirements
Degree: Bachelor’s or graduate/higher level degree: major study in an academic field related to the medical field, health sciences or allied sciences appropriate to the work of the position. This degree must be from an educational program from an accrediting body recognized by the U.S. Department of Education at the time the degree was obtained.
In addition to the above basic requirements:
To qualify at the FV-J (FG/GS 14) level, you must demonstrate in your application that you possess one (1) year of Specialized Experience equivalent to the FV-I (FG/GS 13) level. Specialized experience is experience that has equipped you with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the position.
Specialized experience includes: experience with aviation medicine or medical impacts of flight operations; organization and interpretation of raw data suitable for epidemiological statistical analysis; designing and managing studies of public health problems; and collecting and analyzing data to find the causes of diseases or other health problems.
