The following are the duties of this position at the GS-12. If you are selected at a lower grade level, you will have the opportunity to learn to perform all these duties, and will receive training to help you grow in this position.
As an Economist, you will:

Key Requirements:You must meet the following requirements by the closing date of this announcement.
For the GS-12, you must have one year of specialized experience at a level of difficulty and responsibility equivalent to the GS-11 grade level in the Federal service. For this position, specialized experience is defined as:
- Collecting and analyzing economic data of labor markets, economic developments, demographics, and housing market trends; AND
- Preparing briefing papers, memoranda, reports and presentations regarding economic developments and make basic recommendations to upper management; AND
- Making market feasibility determinations for housing proposals.
For the GS-11, you must have one year of specialized experience at a level of difficulty and responsibility equivalent to the GS-9 grade level in the Federal service. For this position, specialized experience is defined as:
- Collecting and analyzing economic data of labor markets, economic developments, demographics, and housing market trends; AND
- Preparing briefing papers, memoranda, reports and presentations regarding economic developments.
OR
- 3 years of progressively higher level graduate education, directly related to the position, leading to a Ph.D. degree or Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree;
OR
- You may qualify on a combination of education and experience. To combine education and experience, the total percentage of experience at the required grade level compared to the requirement, as well as the percentage of completed education compared to the requirement must equal at least 100 percent. Only graduate level education in excess of the first 36 semester hours (54 quarter hours) may be combined to be considered for qualifying education.
For the GS-9, you must have one year of specialized experience at a level of difficulty and responsibility equivalent to the GS-7 grade level in the Federal service. For this position, specialized experience is defined as:
- Collecting and analyzing economic data of labor markets, economic developments, demographics, and housing market trends.
OR
- 2 years of progressively higher level graduate education, directly related to the position, leading to a master's degree or equivalent graduate degree;
OR
- You may qualify on a combination of education and experience. To combine education and experience, the total percentage of experience at the required grade level compared to the requirement, as well as the percentage of completed education compared to the requirement must equal at least 100 percent. Only graduate level education in excess of the first 18 semester hours (27 quarter hours) may be combined to be considered for qualifying education.
Experience may have been gained in either the public, private sector or volunteer service. One year of experience refers to full-time work; part-time work is considered on a prorated basis. To ensure full credit for your work experience, please indicate dates of employment by month/day/year, and indicate number of hours worked per week on your resume.
Basic Education Requirements:
A. Successful completion of a full 4-year course of study in an accredited college or university leading to a bachelor's or higher degree in economics, that included at least 21 semester hours in economics and 3 semester hours in statistics, accounting, or calculus.
OR
B. Combination of education and experience: courses equivalent to a major in economics, as shown in A above, plus appropriate experience or additional education as noted in the Qualification section of the Job Announcement.
Examples of qualifying experience include:
1.Individual economic research assignments requiring planning, information assembly, analysis and evaluation, conclusions and report preparation;
2.Supervisory or project coordination assignments involving a staff of professional economists, and requiring the evaluation and interpretation of economic information; or
3.Teaching assignments in a college or university that included both class instruction in economics subjects and one of the following (1) personal research that produced evidence of results, (2) direction of graduate theses in economics, or (3) service as a consultant or advisor on technical economics problems.
The education generally must be from an accredited (or pre-accredited) college or university recognized by the U.S. Department of Education. If you are qualifying based on foreign education, you must submit proof of creditability of education as evaluated by a credentialing agency. Refer to the OPM instructions.
