Major Duties of the Position:
Under the direction of the Associate Dean/Director of the McDermott Library at the United States Air Force Academy, the Assistant Director of Public Services supports the overall planning, supervision, and coordination of staff in Research Services, Circulation, and Interlibrary Loan. This position recommends, develops, and/or reviews policies and workflows in public services to best suit the needs of a contemporary, undergraduate-focused research library while ensuring coordination of efforts with colleagues across the library. The Assistant Director supports library assessments using a variety of data to evaluate effectiveness of library programs and services; ensures delivery of well-organized and effective information literacy instruction by research librarians; collaborates with direct reports and peers to engage in outreach to internal and external library stakeholders; and supports the use of contemporary software by research librarians that provides user-focused access to online materials. As a member of the McDermott Library's senior leadership team, the Assistant Director assists with library strategic planning, prepares proposals for review, and ensures that public services are aligned to the strategic plans of the McDermott Library, the Dean of Faculty, and the wider Air Force Academy. In its supervisory capacity, this position works with direct reports to identify annual performance expectations and set professional development goals to enhance skills. The Assistant Director will also ensure robust communication among staff during project planning and execution across divisional lines. The position is responsible for ensuring adequate coverage of library public services during peak workload periods and holidays. The Assistant Director serves on library and Academy-wide working groups and/or committees and leverages library partnerships with other teaching and learning centers at the Academy.

The mission of the United States Air Force Academy is to educate, train, and inspire men and women to become leaders of character, motivated to lead the United States Air Force in service to our nation.
The USAF Academy does not offer tenure. Initial faculty appointments are for 3 years. At the end of the second year, the original appointment may be extended for an additional 3 years (6 years total) with the possibility of successive extensions. This appointment system provides long-term employment stability for reappointment-eligible faculty with extensions occurring with at least 3 years remaining on a current appointment. Extensions are based on an assessment of performance, Air Force and departmental needs, and financial constraints. Historically, 95% of eligible faculty are extended, and the average length of time on faculty for those currently serving in this system exceeds 12 years.
USAFA, located just north of Colorado Springs, Colorado, is an undergraduate institution that awards the Bachelor of Science degree. Faculty applications are invited from candidates who can contribute by interacting with cadets, both in and out of the classroom, as instructors and mentors. The student body consists of approximately 4,000 students representing every state and several foreign countries. USAFA faculty is an integrated group of military and civilian educators. The curriculum includes core academic and professional courses, and 27 disciplinary and interdisciplinary majors.
