Serving as a leader within the division and responsible for leading a parkwide team of permanent and seasonal staff, volunteers, interns, and others to accomplish established agency and park goals. Assisting the Director in all aspects of interpretive planning, including development and maintenance of visitor use planning documents, annual staffing, budget, and operational plans.
Establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with representatives of other organizations to foster effective partnerships and implement the mission and goals of the Park. Providing interpretive training and mentoring to staff, coworkers, volunteers, partners, and concession employees concerning the presentation of interpretive/education programs, the execution and development of interpretive techniques and skills, and the effective operation of facilities. Non-personal service work may include design, writing, and coaching of interpretive publications, informational posters and signs for closures and warnings, wayside exhibits, film/video, social media, webpage development, visitor center exhibits, and short-term off-site exhibits.
Physical Demands: The work regularly includes long periods of strenuous physical activity including periods of standing, walking, climbing, and lifting of objects weighing up to 50 lbs. Duties involve performing physically rigorous assignments in isolated outdoor environments while exposed to severe weather conditions.
Must possess the ability to climb in and out of small unstable boats using over the side boarding ladders. Must be able to maneuver on wet, sometimes slippery rolling boat decks in various weather and seas conditions. Ability to jump short distance (3/4 feet) over water from a rolling deck to docking or landing site or vice-versa during adverse weather and sea conditions and periods of darkness.
Work Environment: Some of the work is performed indoors in an office setting. The work is performed at various hours of the day and evening and for prolonged periods during emergency situations. Shift work is required during the busy season. Incumbent is required to operate motor vehicles, motorboats, snowmobiles, and kayakers.
The work is spread over 750 square miles of Lake Superior and Wisconsin mainland, greatly complicating the coordination of logistical support and severely impacting the time required to conduct supervisory responsibilities. The work of the division is often subject to stormy weather, adding to both the difficulty and necessity of providing resource education and visitor information to the public as well as creating hazardous traveling conditions for employees.

The Lakeshore headquarters and duty station is located in Bayfield, Wisconsin, a small lakefront community. The communities of Washburn and Ashland are 12 and 23 miles respectively to the south. The area has wonderful year-round recreational opportunities, from kayaking, sailing, boating and hiking in the summer to downhill and cross-country skiing, snowshoeing and dog-sledding in the winter. Fishing, hunting, and camping opportunities are excellent. Bayfield County has thousands of acres of public lands including national forest, national lakeshore, county forest, and public/private conservancy areas. There is a rich culture and arts community, including live music "under the tent" at Big Top Chautauqua. Schools (K-12) and health clinics are available near all three communities, with a hospital and specialty care available in Ashland. Northland College, an environmental undergraduate institution, is in Ashland.
Duluth is a major area hub for shopping, regional airport, commercial services, and medical care. The cities of Minneapolis-St. Paul and Madison offer bigger city amenities and are approximately 4 to 5 hours drive from Bayfield.
The local Bayfield climate offers cool summers (50s to 70s, a few days in the 80s) and cold winters (averaging from 20 above to 20 below zero) and averaging around 90" of snow.

APIS is a unit of the National Park system and contains 21 islands and 13 miles of the Wisconsin coastline of Lake Superior. The islands are spread over a portion of Lake Superior that is nearly 290,000 acres in size - an area larger than Rocky Mountain National Park - that is only accessible by boat.
The park is best known for its sea caves, kayaking, sailing, beaches and lighthouses. It has a very rich natural and cultural history, including exceptionally high quality old-growth forest, landscape scale Canada yew, among the most diverse coastal features and highest quality wetlands in the Great Lakes, maritime cliffs and forests, diverse wildlife, and habitat for Federally endangered piping plover and State endangered American marten and peregrine falcon. The park is home to over 5,000 years of human history, from Native peoples to fishermen, loggers, lighthouse keepers and recreationalists.
