As a Utility Systems Operator-Repairer, you will operate and maintain potable water systems and wastewater treatment plants located throughout Shenandoah National Park. This key position ensures regulatory compliance of the systems to the standards set forth by Virginia Department of Environmental Quality, U.S. Public Health, Virginia Department of Health and Environmental Protection Agency. As such, it requires the applicant to possess and maintain a Virginia Class 6 Waterworks License.

In order to be qualified for this position, you must possess the ability to do the work of a Utility Systems Repairer-Operator with only occasional supervision of your work in progress. Your experience must include: repairing a wide variety of equipment used in the water/wastewater treatment process, such as chlorinators, masticators, pumps, injection systems, or aeration equipment; performing standard laboratory tests to determine the characteristics of potable or waste water, such as pH or turbidity, and recording the results for official reporting; based on the laboratory test results, following standard operating procedures regarding the addition of chemicals/compounds to water to achieve a desired result; and monitoring gauges, pumps, and water levels to ensure a water system is operating in alignment with facility guidelines. Your resume must document fully how you meet this requirement.
You must also possess by time of appointment and be able to maintain a Virginia Class 6 (or higher) Waterworks License.
This job does not have an education qualification requirement.
Travel, transportation, and relocation expenses will be paid if the person selected for the position is from outside the local commuting area and is otherwise eligible for reimbursement of relocation expenses under the Federal Travel Regulations (such as current permanent Federal employees).
Physical Requirements: The work often requires standing, stooping, sitting, kneeling, bending, twisting, climbing, walking, and work in tiring and uncomfortable positions. Frequently lifts, carries, and sets up parts and equipment that weigh up to 50 pounds. The work is done inside and outside where dirt, spray, chemicals, fumes, and confined space conditions are present. Also required to work in adverse weather and/or wear protective equipment and clothing. Will work in weather temperatures 0 to 100 degrees and other outdoor exposure includes but not limited to exposure to biting and stinging insects and other wildlife found in natural areas.
