The Periop Anesthesia Registered Nurse (RN) provides clear concise pre-procedural education, including (but not limited to) the a nursing assessment of the patients. Instructs the patients on medications to take the morning of procedure or hold the day of surgery, ensuring that anticoagulants are stopped or continued per the physician orders. Confirms the blood consent is obtained per the providers when a transfusion may be necessary. Warrants that all preprocedural testing is complete which includes lab work, 12- Lead EKG, Pacemaker transmission/ interrogation, chest x-ray, ABG, MRSA testing, and adheres to the Maximum Surgical Blood Ordering Schedule (MSBOS). Performs annual suicide screening and the Mobility Screen Tool is administered (MSST). If preprocedural testing is not completed the information is communicated to the team to obtain the day of the surgical procedures in the Ambulatory Surgical Area (ASU). Gathers patient records from other facilities prior to the patients Preop anesthesia visit. The Preop Anesthesia RN makes a chart for the patient that travels with the patient through their surgical procedure (ASU, OR, PACU-Phase I/Phase II). Obtains a verbal confirmation from the patient about the surgical site and the laterality and compares with the surgical consult. Works closely with the Schedulers and MPU ensuring patients are aware of their appointment times. Responsible for Preop Anesthesia patient phone calls including Face to Face appointments and telephone appointments, 48 hours prior to scheduled appointments. Strong communication skills to discuss surgical procedures with the patient, caregiver, Nurse Practitioners, Anesthesia Team, Ambulatory Care Lead, Post Anesthesia Care Lead, Management, Surgery Clinics, Medical Procedure Unit, and Surgery Front Desk. Works with Social Services and Surgery Clinic when patients need a medical companion or assistance with travel. Preop Anesthesia Nurse (RN) maintains knowledge of current American Society of Peri anesthesia Nurses (ASPAN) standards, VHA Directive and service level standard operating procedures. The Preop Anesthesia Nurse (RN) responsible for ensuring comprehensive documentation of care and is timely, complete, and accurate in the electronic health record.
