The Risk Manager fulfills the responsibilities of the position by utilizing sound organizational skills. The incumbent will develop creative approaches to the management of the Risk Management Program. The incumbent is to identify risk vulnerabilities through the analysis of data and implementation of performance improvement strategies. The Risk Manager is to be familiar with the accreditation process and be actively involved in the ongoing compliance assessment of the standards that are identified as Risk. The Risk Manager is to identify risk areas that include or availability of data/information. All resource issues are to be evaluated, noting all options available and then proceeding with the appropriate course of action which will result in the most favorable organizational outcome. The incumbent is to provide leadership in the application of Risk Management principles, compliance with external accreditation standards, and VHA Handbooks and Directives. Providing this leadership will promote patient care and organizational processes/systems resulting in improved patient outcomes. Theincumbent is to analyze ethical issues utilizing appropriate theoretical principles, ensure the application of institutional policy, and serve as a resource and advocate for the protection of patients and family rights. The incumbent coaches colleagues in team building when applicable and makes sustained contributions to health care by sharing expertise within and/or outside the medical facility. The incumbent is expected to actively participate on Medical Center committees where they have the opportunity to share clinical/professional expertise with others within the facility. Additionally, they are to function as a consultant in Risk Management and provide consultation on issues related to risk. The incumbent is to collaborate with a variety of individuals within the VISN and VHA. The Risk Manager is to initiate interdisciplinary projects to improve organizational performance. They provide active leadership on inter-disciplinary committees, task forces, or other groups that have the objective of improving organizational performance. The Risk Manager, in conjunction with the Peer Review Nurse, prepares a quarterly summary review of 20 peer review cases are prepared for the Central Office. A peer review spreadsheet is prepared for the VISN that includes a summary of all completed peer reviews. The Institutional Disclosure is also reported quarterly to the VISN. The incumbent is responsible for overseeing the education of all new employees on the elements of the Risk Management Program. Additional training is presented to Nursing Orientation each month. The Risk Manager is responsible for displaying peer review and risk management data using an appropriate data tool. The incumbent must have a solid ability to manage charts and graphs (histograms, control charts, scatter grams, and data mining). Mandatory knowledge of multiple data display products and having the ability to analyze this information and present it to practitioners is a key element of this position. The Risk Manager is responsible for providing information to the Office of Inspector General and The Joint Commission upon request. This includes written and other information that is needed during on-site reviews. The Manager is to be familiar with the compliance of the Joint Commission standards that are assigned as Risk and is to conduct tracer rounds as warranted by the Continuous Readiness program. The Risk Manager will initiate a process to proactively identify risk trends facility wide. Meet with individual services and departments to review current Risk Assessments. He/she will capture and quantify the data providing Executive Leadership a clear understanding of current risks and risk exposure. The Risk Manager works with the Peer Review cases ensuring they are identified from multiple avenues including, Occurrence Screens, tort claims, and administrative and clinical concerns. Each completed peer review is copied or scanned to the appropriate attorney if a tort claim is involved. The committee's peer review results are uploaded into the database. Quarterly reports of peer reviews are created for the VISN with a complete quarterly report completed for presentation to the Peer Review Committee and MEC.
Preferred Experience:
Master's degree and/or a Bachelor's degree from a field related in nursing from an accredited program.
5 years in a clinical nursing practice.
Team player. and capable of working well with others and independently.
Sound organizational skills.
